Sundowns enjoyed a perfect start
The Mamelodi Sundowns enjoyed a perfect start to their Club World Cup campaign when beating Ulsan HD 1-0 at the Inter&Co Stadium, Cincinnati. Few football fans and pundits expected them to take many points from their efforts in the United States, but the CWC25 is nothing if not unpredictable. The Sundowns qualified as the second-best ranked eligible team in the CAF four-year ranking, and jetted to the US as South African Premiership champions. They were made to work for the win by the South Koreans last Tuesday, but a goal from South African Iqraam Rayners on 36 minutes proved enough to shade a competitive contest.
With three points in the bank, Mamelodi turned their attentions to German Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund on matchday two. The rivals served up an amazing seven-goal thriller at the TQL Stadium, Cincinnati, with Dortmund snatching the points with a 4-3 win. In a fascinating showdown, the Sundowns claimed an early lead and fought back from 3-1 and 4-2 behind to push their opponents all the way to the finish line. Dortmund deserved the points, and it was a little more clean-cut than the bare result suggests, but the Sundowns won many new fans.
Mamelodi now fancy their chances of adding another win, but face an organised opponent with a solid defence. With both teams knowing they can't afford to lose, I expect a nervy game at the home of the NFL side, the Miami Dolphins.

Brazilians in the driving seat
Fluminense travel to Miami Gardens sitting in pole position in Club World Cup Group F after a couple of games. Tricolor secured their second appearance as winners of the 2023 Copa Libertadores, but failed to make an impact on either the Brazilian Serie A or the Carioca. Renato Gaúcho's team have performed much better on the international stage, blasting their way to the top of the pool with four points from a possible six. They were held to a goalless draw by Borussia Dortmund in East Rutherford on matchday one, with almost 35,000 fans in attendance. Goalkeeper Fabio produced a man-of-the-match performance to secure a draw for his team.
Fluminense finished as Club World Cup runners-up behind Manchester City in 2023 looked back to their best on matchday two when flattening Ulsan HD at the MetLife Stadium. It was an opponent they were expected to beat, and had no issues living up to the hype, but they deserve full credit for the manner of victory. Goals from Arias, Nonato, Freytes, and Keno gave Fluminense a stunning 4-2 win, sending them racing to the head of the group. Fluminense have four points from a possible six, scored four goals and conceded just two.
If the Brazilians are anywhere near the best, and can carry on from the great work achieved against Borussia Dortmund and Ulsan HD, they're great value to score a crucial win and three points. They'll be eager to protect their position, but know victory sends them through to the knockout stages, either as winners or runners-up.
