The Seattle Sounders prepare for their second match in their second appearance at the Club World Cup. The Sounders qualified for this tournament as winners of the 2022 CONCACAF Champions League and hope to learn from their 2022 campaign. Few pundits expect Seattle to go all the way and win the World Cup, proving themselves the best team on Planet Football. But the Sounders are expected to battle for a top-two finish in the group and a place in the knockout rounds.

The MLS side opened their account on Sunday evening by suffering a 2-1 defeat to Brazilian Serie A side Botafogo. Lumen Field was also the setting for that game, but the Sounders couldn't make it count despite their best efforts. The result suggests a tight game, but in fact the Brazilians had raced into a 2-0 lead before taking their foot off the gas in the second half. They never looked like losing the match, and despite conceding in the second half, an equaliser didn't look likely.

Jair broke the deadlock for Botafogo on 28 minutes, before Igor Jesus added a second just before the interval. Roldan hit back with 75 minutes on the clock, but Seattle couldn't gift the 30,000 fans inside the stadium a leveller to ensure they ended with a share of the spoils. That loss means the Sounders must get something from this match to remain in the running. They must improve at the back and be more clinical in attack on Thursday. Unfortunately, Seattle now faces a big-name opponent in desperate need of a win.

Atletico Madrid ranks as one of the major attractions in the United States this summer. The Spanish La Liga side qualified as the sixth-best-ranked eligible team in the UEFA four-year rankings. When dropped into Group B alongside the Seattle Sounders, Botafogo and French Ligue 1 champions PSG, most pundits predicted a place in the next round. PSG scored the first of their four goals inside the opening 20 minutes of play when Fabian Ruiz made it 1-0. Vitinha netted to double the lead seconds before half time, and there was more of the same in the second 45, with Atletico unable to keep pace. Mayulu struck a third goal near the end, with Lee Kang-In wrapping things up from the penalty spot in added time. The losing side's relief to hear the final whistle was obvious for all to see, and they know much better is required if they are to compete at this level. I expect a big response.
