Since Vinicius Junior was substituted during El Clasico on Sunday, he has dominated headlines amid growing speculation that his time at Real Madrid could be nearing an explosive end.

The frenzy is largely self-inflicted, after his dramatic reaction towards manager Xabi Alonso for being taken off against Barcelona left little room for interpretation.

His frustration is somewhat understandable given the magnitude of the fixture - yet his words have placed intense scrutiny on the club.

After being taken off in the 2-1 victory, a television crew caught Vinicius saying: “Always me! I’m leaving the team! It’s better if I leave, I’m leaving.”

Reports in recent months had already suggested that Madrid might consider parting ways with him if a suitable offer arrived - especially if no breakthrough on a new contract is found.

At the end of this season, he will have one year remaining on his dea,l and negotiations over a new one have not progressed.

For now, however, sources insist there are no plans to sanction a sale.

Liverpool are an early club being linked with the Brazilian, but insiders believe such speculation is premature.

Real Madrid are publicly downplaying the incident - and behind closed doors, Vinicius is now expected to resolve his differences with Alonso.

The hope within the club is that the issue will be smoothed over and that Vinicius will continue to play a vital role in their bid to reclaim La Liga’s crown from Barcelona.

In the long term, though, attention will inevitably turn to whether Vinicius can mend relationships sufficiently to stay at the club.

While a January transfer is off the table, the way this season unfolds will influence how satisfied both player and club feel about the future.

No disciplinary action will be taken against Vinicius for his outburst from the weekend, with Real Madrid instead now trusting both player and coach to ensure the situation does not cause any lasting damage.
