Our Picks: Mammoth Bundesliga clash and Ajax face ultimate test

This week's top picks feature an unwelcome test for a struggling Ajax team, an eye-catching affair between two high-flying German sides and a clash between Wrexham and Notts County.

Take a look at some of our top picks across Europe worth keeping an eye on over the weekend:

PSV v Ajax - Anthony Paphitis

PSV and Ajax lock horns in an Eredivisie showdown at the Philips Stadion on Sunday, but the encounter is not as you would usually know it.

Hosts PSV enter the fixture in frightening form - perfect with nine wins from nine, a whopping 30 goals scored and just three conceded.

Peter Bosz's side have been worth their value and deservedly top the table, although their opponents Ajax have come nowhere near to experiencing such highs.

Regularly a force towards the summit, de Godezonen have struggled mightily and are slumped second from bottom with just one win from seven games.

With just five points, it is the club's worst-ever start to a season and unsurprisingly cost Maurice Steijn his job after just 11 games at the helm.

PSV will see it as an ample opportunity to assert their dominance at the top and feel they can do that given some of the performances their players have put in.

Luuk de Jong has been highly productive with seven goals and five assists while talented winger Johan Bakayoko has registered two and three respectively.

Midfielders Guus Til and Joey Veerman have also caught the eye.

It is the least ideal match-up for Ajax and caretaker boss Hedwiges Maduro, who looks to have been dealt a pretty tough opening hand.

To add even more insult to injury for the visitors, they are winless in the last five head-to-head meetings with PSV across all competitions - losing four of them.

They also could even end the weekend dropping to the bottom which for such a vulnerable-looking team, is not completely out of the question.

Inter v Roma - Joel Barnett

Roma travel to the San Siro on Sunday off the back of five straight wins - their best run of the season so far.

Under pressure following a shaky start to the campaign, Mourinho’s men have suddenly hit form and will need to be at their best to get anything from an Inter side who have already scored the most (24) and conceded the least (five) in the entire division.

The Giallorossi’s recent form has lifted them into seventh - three points off the Champions League places - and with most teams above them facing tricky fixtures this weekend, there could be no better time to close the gap on table-topping Nerazzurri as well as those around them.

Inter will hope Jose Mourinho, returning to the club he managed from 2008-10, won’t come back to haunt them as they look to extend their lead at the top of the table to four points ahead of AC Milan’s trip to Napoli later in the evening.

To do so they’d need to improve on recent home form, with Bologna coming from 2-0 down to draw 2-2, and Sassuolo earning a shock 2-1 win - from being 1-0 down - in their last two home league matches.

Lautaro Martinez has been the stand-out star for Inter, scoring 11 times already this campaign, but all eyes will be on whether Romelu Lukaku can maintain his terrific start to the season.

The Belgian has only failed to score in three games for the Giallorossi this term, and found the back of the net again on Thursday.

Notts County v Wrexham - Brad Ferguson

Last season's promoted sides from the National League have taken to League Two life rather well, with Notts County flying high in second and the now global mega-brand Wrexham close on their tails in third.

Both go into the game on the back of decent runs of form.

County recently managed to undo the damage of a shock 4-1 home defeat to Mansfield, bouncing back with solid victories over a tricky Gillingham side and struggling Newport to keep their push at the top in motion.

With 33 goals in 15 matches, they're the second-highest goalscorers in the division, thanks mainly to the exploits of striker Macaulay Langstaff who's been banging them in for fun, netting 11 times and featuring in every league game so far.

They'll be hoping his scoring form can keep the celebrity owners and their A-list fans quiet on Saturday when the Wrexham boys return to the glitz and glamour of Meadow Lane for a rekindling of their rivalry that played out quite nicely on Disney+ show Welcome to Wrexham.

Both sides shared a win apiece during last season's title race but Wrexham's 3-2 victory in their last meeting - in which County missed a last-minute penalty to steal a point - arguably did the damage that would see the Welsh side go on to finish in top spot.

The visitors come into the game off the back of an impressive unbeaten run stretching to seven games across all competitions.

And in true form to their owners, Wrexham have very much been League Two's great entertainers so far this season, scoring 30 and conceding 27 in their 15 fixtures with results ranging from 5-5 draws and a 4-2 win to a slightly humiliating 5-0 drubbing away to league leaders Stockport County.

Star striker Paul Mullin appears to be reacquiring his taste for goals, netting two in his last two league appearances after a fairly stuttering return from injury - oh how the documentary crew could do with something special from the forward in this one!

Stuttgart v Hoffenheim - Ali Pollock

An intriguing clash in the Bundesliga on Saturday sees second-placed Stuttgart face off against sixth-placed Hoffenheim.

Not many supporters would have predicted the home side would be so high in the table after eight games and yet they find themselves above 33-time champions Bayern Munich.

Much of their good form has been down to striker Serhou Guirassy who has netted an incredible 14 goals in eight league games – although they will have to cope without him for the visit of Hoffenheim after he picked up a hamstring injury.

Brighton loanee Deniz Undav could have a part to play on Saturday, giving him a chance to improve on his already impressive start of three goals and one assist from five Bundesliga appearances.

Hoffenheim themselves have enjoyed a solid start to the campaign with five wins and three losses, currently occupying a Europa Conference League spot.

Youngster Maximillian Beier has six goals already this season, which coupled with Andrej Kramaric’s four strikes makes quite the formidable attacking force.

Despite their strong forwards, Hoffenheim have conceded 14 league goals already which Stuttgart could potentially exploit.

The clash is shaping up to be an exciting one, with two in-form teams going against each other.

Athletic v Valencia - Ste Carson

Valencia will travel to Bilbao this weekend to face off against Athletic, which will provide the visitors a half-chance to leapfrog their hosts after a poor start to the season.

Los Leones claimed three wins from five matches in the first few weeks of La Liga, but it hasn't all been smooth sailing since then.

The Basque side were defeated 1-0 by Barcelona last time out, whereas Valencia were able to get the better of Cadiz by the scoreline 2-0.

So the momentum is with Los Ches, but they have struggled to find goals at times in the season's early stages - they've scored just one more (12) than they've conceded (11).

To compound that, Athletic's form at home has been key to their strong start to the new campaign - unbeaten at home, they've won three matches and drawn one.

Looking back at this fixture through the years, Valencia fans would have to paw back to 2019 to find their last La Liga win over Athletic - coincidentally, away from home.

Los Leones have actually claimed victory in the sides' last three meetings in all competitions, which isn't great reading for Los Ches supporters.

Athletic certainly go into the match with their heads held higher than their opponents, but the result may come down to which version of Inaki Williams turns up.

The Ghana striker has four goals to his name so far this season, but he's shockingly failed to find the back of Valencia's net in all 19 prior head-to-head matches.

San Mames' visitors this weekend will be hoping to rush out of the blocks and claim an early lead, with Hugo Duro - who also has four goals - their biggest threat to Athletic.
