Two of La Liga’s most in-form sides

Betis host the leaders in the headline match of the round, with the possible exception of Atlético de Madrid vs Athletic Club in matchday 15 of La Liga. The Verdiblancos have earned the fourth most points in the last four rounds (8), only behind Barcelona, Villarreal and Atlético. Barca and Villarreal have won all their games, while Atlético have taken nine points out of twelve. This strong run has put Betis at the front of the chasing pack for Champions League places with 24 points, seven behind Atletico. Last round’s win in the Seville derby was especially important, as they beat their eternal rivals, Sevilla, 2-0 away. Before that, Manuel Pellegrini’s men drew with Valencia and Girona after a 3-0 victory over Mallorca. In between, they’ve also won in the Europa League and the Copa del Rey, taking maximum points against Olympique Lyon (2-0) and Utrecht (2-1), and progressing to the round of 32 in the cup with a 4-1 win over Torrent. Antony and Abde, two of their key attacking threats, are expected to be fit despite recent knocks, while Amrabat remains a doubt in midfield.

Barcelona, meanwhile, look to defend top spot at a notoriously tough ground. After losing the ‘Clásico’ to Real Madrid, the Blaugrana have strung together five straight league wins to climb to the summit. They bounced back from the setback at the Santiago Bernabéu with consecutive victories over Elche (3-1), Celta (4-2), Athletic (4-0), Alavés (3-1) and Atlético Madrid (3-1). That last win was a statement in the rearranged fixture ahead of the Supercopa, which Barcelona will contest in January. Things haven’t gone as well for Hansi Flick’s side in the Champions League, where they’ve failed to win during this period, drawing 3-3 away to Brugge and losing 3-0 at Stamford Bridge to Chelsea. With 37 points, they have just a one-point cushion over second-placed Real Madrid, so any slip-up could see them lose their grip on top spot. Injuries have once again hit Barca, with Dani Olmo ruled out for the next month after a shoulder dislocation against Atleti. Pedri also picked up a knock in that match, just as he was returning from his previous injury, though the man from the Canary Islands could still make it to La Cartuja.

Chasing a fifth straight win

Our first tip is to back Barcelona. Their impressive league response after losing to Real Madrid in the October ‘Clásico’ has made the ‘Culés’ the most reliable team in the competition. Atlético were also in that category until their recent loss at the Camp Nou. That win further cements Barca’s status as favourites, with their bad displays seemingly reserved for the Champions League. Barcelona have also enjoyed good results away to Betis. They’re unbeaten in their last nine meetings overall, but away, that run stretches back even further to January 2011, when they lost 3-1 in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals. Since then, in 27 matches between the sides, Betis have only won twice, both times in Barcelona: 4-3 in November 2018 and 1-0 in December 2021. Since that cup defeat, Barça have played 13 competitive games at Betis, winning ten and drawing three. For these reasons, we’re backing the away win.

Tip: Barcelona to win: 8/11 @ bet365

Bet explanation: If Barcelona win, this bet is a winner.

Barca, a guarantee of goals

Barcelona have played 20 competitive matches so far this season. In 11 of them, there have been four or more goals scored between both teams. That’s a ratio worth noting, especially with lively games like the 2-3 against Levante, 6-0 versus Valencia, 6-1 over Olympiacos, 3-3 at Brugge or 4-2 against Celta. In fact, since November began, only one Barcelona match has failed to reach four goals – the 3-0 defeat to Chelsea. In the rest, there were at least four: Elche (3-1), Athletic (4-0), Alavés (3-1) and Atlético de Madrid (3-1), while Brugge (3-3) and Celta (4-2) saw six. However, it’s not just their attacking stats that suggest over 3.5 goals, but also their struggles to keep clean sheets, combined with Betis’s ability to score. In their last 14 competitive games, Barcelona have only kept one clean sheet (against Athletic Club). Betis, meanwhile, have scored in eight consecutive matches, and in 21 games this season, have only failed to score twice – in the 0-2 loss to Atleti and the 0-0 draw with Genk in the Europa League.

Tip: Over 3.5 goals: 10/11 @ bet365

Bet explanation: This selection wins if there are 4 or more goals in total in the match.

Flick’s attacking machine

Hansi Flick’s attacking philosophy is no secret. Building on the previous tip, Barcelona not only score plenty, but they’re always looking for more. That’s why the 10/11 odds for over 5.5 shots on target are well worth considering. Looking at their last 10 competitive matches, the Blaugrana have had more than five shots on target in seven. They managed nine against Celta, eight versus Girona, seven against Olympiacos and Athletic, and six against Brugge, Alavés and Atlético Madrid. They hit five against Real Madrid and Elche, and only two in their poor showing at Chelsea. Expanding to the last 20 games, they’ve hit at least six shots on target in 14, with highs of 10 against Levante, Valencia, Oviedo and Real Sociedad. Focusing just on their 15 league matches, Barça have registered 111 shots on target, averaging 7.4 per game in La Liga.

Tip: Barcelona over 5.5 shots on target: 10/11 @ bet365

Bet explanation: Barca must have at least 6 shots on target for this bet to win.
