After a brilliant evening for Real Madrid in the Champions League, their focus turns back to LaLiga and chasing down Barcelona. This week, Elche stand in their way, with their own relegation worries.

Real Madrid are on a high after their win against Manchester City. They were the unfancied team coming into the tie, but a 3-0 win has shown that Los Blancos are still the force to be reckoned with, despite two losses in their last three LaLiga matches.

With that strong position in Europe, they can put even more focus into their LaLiga campaign and put pressure on Barcelona, four points ahead of them in the table.

Elche won’t be pushovers in theory, as teams fighting for their life can be dangerous. The relegation-threatened Los Franjiverdes need to start picking up more points to stave off the chasing pack.

Coming into this matchweek, they are only a point ahead of Mallorca and four ahead of a Levante side that has found some form. It will be a tough task to get anything out of a confident Real, but the losses to Getafe and Osasuna show that there are weaknesses in Alvaro Arbeloa’s side.

Real Madrid team news

Real have an extensive injury list. Top scorer in both LaLiga and the Champions League, Kylian Mbappe is out with a knee injury and is in the treatment room with David Alaba, Jude Bellingham, Dani Ceballos, Eder Militao, Alvaro Carreras, and Rodrygo. Franco Mastantuono will be missing because of a red card in the Getafe game.

With so many first-team players out, others have had to step up. Ferland Mendy has found his way back into the team at left back, and 18-year-old Thiago Pitarch has found himself in the first-team fold too. One player who has really made all the injuries seem insignificant is captain Fede Valverde. His four goals in two games have secured the last two wins for Real, reminding everyone of the quality of the imperious midfielder.

Elche team news

Elche will be waiting on news about John Donald’s injury. The defensive midfielder missed the last game against Villarreal because of it, but could be back for the trip to the Spanish capital. One player Elche will definitely be without is 19-year-old on-loan Barcelona defender Hector Fort, who is still recovering from a shoulder injury that has kept him out since December.

Alvaro Rodriguez, in midfield, spent his formative years at Real Madrid, only featuring for the team once. He scored against his previous employers in the first game between these two this season and will be hoping for a start here to show them what they missed out on again.

Head-to-head record

Real Madrid have a great record against Elche. They are unbeaten in their last 15 LaLiga matches against them (W12 D3), since a 3-1 defeat all the way back in March 1978. This is their longest ever unbeaten run against them in the top-flight.

Then, at home, Real Madrid are unbeaten in all 24 of their LaLiga games against Elche (W20, D4), which is their second-longest unbeaten run against a single opponent at home in the competition.

Elche have not won a game this year in all competitions, last winning on December 21, 2025. Compare this to Real Madrid, who have won 12 matches this year (L5), and the writing seems to be on the wall. Yet Elche managed a 2-2 draw earlier this season against Los Blancos and could have won if it was not for a late equaliser by Jude Bellingham.
