Stade Brestois played with 10 men for the final half-hour as Eric Roy’s side battled to an impressive 1-0 win over AS Monaco, inflicting a fourth league defeat in five matches on Les Monegasques.

Having distanced themselves from the relegation zone following back-to-back victories over Metz and Strasbourg, Les Pirates looked full of confidence in the early stages against Monaco.

Daouda Guindo tested Lukas Hradecky from long range after just a few minutes, before the Finnish shot-stopper produced another smart save to deny a dangerous Remy Labeau Lascary strike.

Undeterred, the hosts continued to probe for a breakthrough, and it duly arrived in the 28th minute when Kamory Doumbia headed home a rebound from six yards after Hradecky had parried Ludovic Ajorque’s initial effort.

Having won just two of their last seven league trips (D1, L4), Monaco went in pursuit of a swift response before the interval, as Takumi Minamino and Mika Biereth missed the target with a pair of promising chances in the box.

Armed with the half-time advantage, Brest nearly doubled their lead at the start of the second period, with Guindo firing a free-kick agonisingly against the bar.

That reprieve sparked the visitors into life, and they were soon handed a major boost on the hour mark when Ajorque - following a lengthy VAR review - was shown a straight red card for a reckless tackle on Lamine Camara.

Determined to make the most of their numerical advantage, Monaco turned to Paul Pogba with time ticking into the final quarter of the 90’.

The Frenchman’s introduction did little to inspire the visitors, however, with Minamino striking wide and Biereth unable to meet a dangerous loose ball in the box.

That summed up a frustrating evening for Sebastien Pocognoli’s side, who failed to build on last week’s victory over Paris Saint-Germain, handing Brest a third successive league win.
