Following a summer spent enjoying World Cup 2026 from the United States, Mexico, and Canada, Premier League football returns to our screens.

Defending champions, Arsenal, open the show with a home match against an ambitious Coventry City side that last appeared in the top flight 26 years ago.

Mikel Arteta boasts a strong record against opposite number Frank Lampard, winning each of the previous four. Will that run continue?

The leading UKGC-licensed sportsbooks featured on this page price victory for Arsenal as a hot favourite in the pre-match betting, and Flashscore’s experienced football writer Frank Monkhouse believes the Londonders will live up to expectations.

Result - Arsenal win

My first suggested bet in the Premier League 2026/27 curtain-raiser comes from the most popular market.

Backing Arsenal to make home advantage count and beat Coventry City won’t make you rich on its own, but it’s a wager I expect to win without too much fuss, and is sure to be popular in weekend accumulators.

Arsenal won the title last season, finishing seven points clear of Manchester City and the chasing pack. The Gunners won 26 games, scored 71 goals, and banked 15 points in their previous five EPL fixtures. That run includes home wins over Burnley, Fulham, and Newcastle without conceding a goal.

The hosts also carry a strong record on matchday one, taking maximum points in each of the last four seasons.

Coventry will arrive with confidence following a stunning season in the Championship under Lampard, but I’m confident the step up in class will prove too much for a squad that’s still not the finished article.

Back Arsenal to beat Coventry in the match-winner market or aim for a bigger price by supporting them to win to nil.

Tip: Arsenal win @ 2/11 (bet365)

Bet explanation: If Arsenal beat Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium, you’ll beat the bookies and secure a profit.

Total goals - Over 2.5

Moving beyond the match-winner market, and the stats give us a strong bet in the total goals.

During my research, I found that a bet on over 2.5 goals landed in the Community Shield, Emirates Cup final, and in all but one of Arsenal’s five matches played in August. They beat Man City 3-0 on Sunday in Cardiff, with new signing Christos Tzolis providing two assists.

Going back further to find competitive matches, Arsenal beat Crystal Palace 2-1 in their last Premier League outing, and hammered Fulham 3-0 here near the end of the 2025/26 campaign. More goals are likely, and over 2.5 is a strong addition to bet builders.

Arteta will send his team out to dominate the ball, keep Coventry camped in their own half, and rely on their talented forward players to turn chances into goals. But let’s not forget that Coventry scored 97 goals in 46 Championship starts under Lampard.

The visitors and underdogs will plot to keep things tight in the opening exchanges, knock Arsenal off their stride, and get under the skin of the home fans. When the moans and groans begin to flow down from the stands, that’s when Lampard will instruct his men to hit at speed on the counter attack. Coventry have the firepower to cause concern.

Tip: Over 2.5 goals @ 4/7 (bet365)

Bet explanation: The winning team isn’t important here, you need Arsenal vs Coventry City to serve up more than three goals.

Score or assist - Viktor Gyokeres

My third and final Arsenal vs Coventry betting tip is on a player, rather than a team. We’re backing Viktor Gyokeres to score or assist on Friday.

The Gunners were ruthless in that win over Man City. They finished with just 41% of the possession, and five shots on target, but scored three goals. They’ll have more of the ball in their return to action, with Swedish striker Gyokeres the target man.

The 28-year-old signed from Sporting in 2025. Viktor scored 27 goals in 66 appearances for club and country last term, including one at the World Cup. He scored twice in Arsenal’s first home match 12 months ago, when Arsenal thrashed Leeds United 5-0.

With Arsenal expected to create plenty of chances, and Gyokeres eager to hit the ground running, you can back him to score or provide an assist against the Sky Blues. A wonderstrike inside the opening 10 minutes of play pays the same as Viktor setting up a scrappy late goal.

When following, you don’t need Arsenal to beat Coventry, but you do want to see them score at least once, with Gyokeres playing an important role in the goal.

In the previous Premier League season, Leeds United, Burnley, and Sunderland all joined from the Championship. In matches against those teams, Gyokeres scored six goals. He put three past The Whites, scored two against the Black Cats, and got one versus the Clarets.

Gyokeres scored his last league goal against Fulham at this stadium in May, but he was on the scoresheet when his team lost 3-2 to Borussia Dortmund in the Emirates Cup final before almost 60,000 fans earlier this month.

Tip: Gyokeres score or assist @ 8/15 (bet365)

Bet explanation: You need Gyokeres to score or provide an assist against Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium on Friday evening.
