Bournemouth's Tyler Adams put in a tireless shift in the middle of the pitch.

Match report

Nine points from four games marked Bournemouth’s best-ever start to a top-flight campaign, and they started confidently here, placing Newcastle on the back foot from the off.

Neat play down the right from David Brooks eventually resulted in a low Tyler Adams strike that forced Nick Pope into a smart stop, prolonging the American international’s wait for a first goal in English football.

At the other end, the Magpies offered some encouragement through Jacob Murphy’s attempt from a tight angle, but Newcastle chances were few and far between in the first period.

The closest either side came to breaking the deadlock before HT was when Evanilson’s first-time ball across the face of goal was turned in by Brooks, only for celebrations to be cut short thanks to a marginal offside call.

A lively start to the second half saw strong appeals for a penalty from Nick Woltemade, who felt unfairly impeded by Bafodé Diakité, shortly before a menacing run from Antoine Semenyo provided the Cherries with some encouragement.

However, with the contest still level, both managers turned to their benches in search of fresh impetus after the hour mark, but no immediate change to the game’s increasingly flat rhythm was forthcoming.

As the minutes ticked away, Bournemouth were the side pushing hardest for a breakthrough, yet clear-cut opportunities never materialised as a late free-kick from substitute Justin Kluivert that was pushed to safety turned out to be the only shot on target of the second half.

A third successive goalless league draw on the road for Newcastle underlines their attacking woes, having now failed to find the net in any of their last four PL trips in a six-game winless run that extends to last season (D4, L2).

Meanwhile, Bournemouth’s streak of three successive home PL wins comes to an end with a result that neither manager should have too many complaints about.

Post-match comments

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola to BBC Sport: "We have to value the point, we are playing against a Champions League club.

"I'm happy with the performance. The way we defended, we played in their half, and we didn't concede many set pieces. The ones we did, we defended really well.

"It is a good start. We were not as brilliant today as we were in previous games, but we have to be competitive. We have to keep this level of performance."

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe to BBC Sport: "I haven't given it too much thought in terms of who deserves what.

"We know Bournemouth are a really good team. We limited them to long shots and Nick made some good saves.

"We didn't get our attacking game going."
