Bournemouth equalled their best Premier League (PL) finish after they sealed ninth spot with a much-deserved 2-0 victory over relegated Leicester City, maintaining their unbeaten H2H record in top-flight home meetings (W5, D2).

Despite being out of top-eight contention, Bournemouth were clearly keen to snatch a top-half finish. They made a purposeful start at the Vitality Stadium, and Evanilson should have done better when he raced through on goal and dragged a left-foot shot harmlessly wide of the far post.

Moments later, Jakub Stolarczyk was required to push the ball around the post after David Brooks had bounced his volley into the ground.

Though mostly dominant, the Cherries were given a scare when Leicester’s Oliver Skipp steered the ball past Kepa Arrizabalaga, only for the effort to be ruled out for an offside in the build-up.

Normal service soon resumed though, and Bournemouth threatened from a free-kick in the closing stages of the half, as Brooks forced Stolarczyk to parry from Justin Kluivert’s layoff, before Evanilson conspired to fire the ball off the post from the rebound.

Andoni Iraola’s side thought their persistence had finally paid off when substitute Daniel Jebbison found the net just past the hour mark. However, the officials ruled that the ball had looped out of play before Jebbison tapped home from Evanilson’s deflected cross, denying the forward the honour of scoring in back-to-back games.

However, Bournemouth’s frustration ultimately subsided when Antoine Semenyo netted a deserved opener in the 74th minute, clipping the ball into the bottom corner from Illya Zabarnyi’s knockdown following a slick short-corner routine.

Semenyo’s 10th Premier League goal of the season ensured Leicester finished the campaign as the only PL team without an away clean sheet, before he piled more misery on the Foxes with the insurance of a late second goal.

The winger drilled a low shot from the edge of the box past the helpless Stolarczyk, condemning Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side to their 13th away league defeat of the season. Leicester will now prepare for the Championship, while Bournemouth will reflect upon a successful campaign where they broke their PL points tally.
