Wolverhampton Wanderers showed fight to come back and earn a 1-1 draw at home to Brenftord, capping off a brilliant run for Vítor Pereira who earned 33 points from his 22 Premier League (PL) games in charge.

Brentford came into the game knowing they had to win in order to give them a possibility of qualifying for Europe next season, with results elsewhere needing to go in their favour.

But it was Wolves who started off brighter, as Matheus Cunha - rumoured to be leaving Molineux in the Summer - came close to opening the scoring but his header was comfortably gathered by Mark Flekken. But against the run of play, the Bees broke the deadlock midway through the first half.

Rayan Aït-Nouri was dispossessed in his own half, and Yoane Wissa saw his effort rebound into the path of Christian Nørgaard, and the Brentford captain picked out Bryan Mbeumo to slot in his 20th PL goal of the season.

After taking the lead minutes after Tottenham went ahead against Brighton, Thomas Frank’s men knew that an eighth-place finish was becoming a reality. The visitors tried to double their lead as HT approached and came close to doing so after Wissa slipped in Keane Lewis-Potter, who tried to lift the ball over José Sá but the Portuguese stopper managed to deny him and keep the score at 1-0 going into the break.

Just like the first half, Wolves got off to the better start after the restart, as Aït-Nouri went close with a strong shot, but Flekken was on hand again to deny the home side. Gonçalo Guedes was next to go close for the home side as they looked to cap off their season in front of their fans with a positive result.

And as Brentford seemed to be holding on in the second half, they were dealt a blow elsewhere in the league as Chelsea took the lead against Nottingham Forest which resulted in eighth-place no longer booking a place in Europe.

Wolves continued to apply the pressure and it finally paid off on 75 minutes when Marshall Munetsi latched onto Jørgen Strand Larsen’s knock down to draw the home side level. With the score at 1-1, neither side managed to nick a second goal with the points shared.

As a result, Brentford finish their campaign in 10th place, and Wolves settle for 16th place after looking destined for relegation before Pereira took charge.
