It was Arsenal walked away from Old Trafford with all three points in United’s opening game after Riccardo Calafiori’s first-half opener turned out to be the difference maker. Despite United’s impressive performance, many have once again attacked certain players who fans feel are not good enough for the club.
One player in particular is Casemiro who many put in the same bracket as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani, Raphael Varane and the Cristiano Ronaldo when he returned to the club in a group of stars who joined the club and never lived up to expectations despite finding success elsewhere.
Former United striker Wayne Rooney dug into Casemiro after his performance against the Gunners, stating that he is not good enough to control the middle of the park.
"Still, a concern for me in the middle of the pitch, I think, with Casemiro and Bruno," Wayne Rooney said in the BBC Sport-produced show.
"I think they need more legs in there. I think Bruno is a fantastic player and I wanna see him a bit higher up the pitch where he can be more creative and try and create and score more goals.
"And Casemiro, I just think we… we’re a little bit weaker in there in covering the full width of the pitch."
Despite criticism, Casemiro has now delivered a defiant message to fans as he states that he is here to stay as he hopes to fight for his place under manager Ruben Amorim.
"I am very happy here," he told reporters. "My family is happy here. I enjoy every day at Carrington and at Old Trafford. If people talk from the outside, that’s fine, it doesn’t interest me. I just want to focus on winning."
United are 15th in the Premier League table after their loss to Arsenal at Old Trafford and will now travel away to face Fulham on Sunday afternoon, Casemiro could once again find minutes whilst young talent such as Kobbie Mainoo struggle to get off the bench.
