Chelsea won’t have long to get over their FA Cup final disappointment, as they’re back in Premier League action on Tuesday evening against Tottenham. Can they put a dent in their rivals’ hopes of staying up, or will their Wembley hangover mean it’s too much, too soon? Premier League betting expert Richard Trenchard takes a look.

Chelsea v Spurs has become one of the Premier League’s fiercest rivalries.

Steeped in history, the rivalry perhaps started in 1967, with the first all-London FA Cup final.

More recently, in the famous 2015/16 season, the Blues beat Spurs and ended their title hopes on a ferocious evening, coined the ‘Battle of the Bridge’.

Whether this contest has similarly aggressive undertones remains to be seen, but in the reverse fixture, some six yellow cards were shown – so this is unlikely to be an end-of-season jolly.

Chelsea still have plenty to prove this term, with a bottom-half finish in the Premier League table still a distinct possibility – crazy, really, for a team crowned Club World Cup champions last summer.

As for Tottenham, avoiding relegation is the only item on the to-do list. Roberto De Zerbi’s appointment has coincided with a four-game unbeaten run – perhaps that’s no coincidence at all.

How Spurs would love to make that five at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.

Heavy legs

Chelsea covered so much ground collectively on Saturday as they fought to keep Manchester City at bay in the FA Cup final.

Players like Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro, not known for their industriousness, put in an almighty shift in a defensive sense, and there’s a chance that one or both of them – Chelsea’s most likely routes to goal – won’t start on Tuesday.

Tottenham are creaking along, but they have improved under De Zerbi and that might just be enough for them to secure a result at Stamford Bridge.

Tip: Tottenham/Draw double chance @ 7/10 (bet365)

Explanation: Our bet lands if Tottenham win or draw this game.

Tightening up

Chelsea’s interim head coach Calum McFarlane has changed the Blues’ shape of late, switching to a back three with defence-minded wing-backs on either side.

It’s a move that has made Chelsea much more robust, yielding just 0.56 of xG to Liverpool and keeping free-scoring Man City at bay for much of the cup final until the game opened up later on.

De Zerbi has stiffened up Spurs’ resolve too, and they have looked far more resolute in the defensive phase since the Italian took charge.

There’s pressure on this game too, of course, while Chelsea’s cup endeavours may just have sapped some of the strength and forward motions from their legs.

This feels like it could be a low-scoring encounter… at a juicy price, as well.

Tip: Under 2.5 goals @ 13/10 (bet365)

Explanation: Our bet lands if there are two goals or fewer in the match.

Air of frustration

Disappointment may turn to frustration for Chelsea’s players on Tuesday if they find Tottenham to be a tough nut to crack.

The history between these sides is such that the cards line at bet365 has been placed at over/under 5.5, which is at least one more than you’d expect in the standard Premier League contest.

Despite being the home side, it would be no surprise if Chelsea’s cup heartache – and their general animosity with Spurs – results in them picking up a plethora of cautions in this one.

Tip: Chelsea over 2.5 cards @ 6/5 (bet365)

Explanation: Our bet lands if Chelsea are shown three or more cards (yellow or red).
