Antonio Conte has left his post as Tottenham Hotspur manager "by mutual consent", the club confirmed late on Sunday evening.

The 53-year-old had been facing increased levels of scrutiny in recent weeks after a mixed run of results and indifferent form, leading to last week's sensational press conference which saw the fiery coach lash out at his own players and the club's hierarchy.

Speaking after the disappointing 3-3 draw away to bottom-club Southampton, Conte described the Tottenham players as "selfish" and claimed the club "had no desire to compete under pressure."

"I see selfish players, players that don't want to help each other and don't put their heart," Conte told reporters.

"Before today I try to hide the situation and improve the situation with words," he continued.

"About tactical and technical, it's one situation, another is the desire, the fire that you need to have in your eyes, your heart.

"You need to have this in every moment. This season compared to last, we are worse in this aspect. When you are not a team you cannot improve.

"The club has the responsibility for the transfer market, the coach has the responsibility. But the players, where are the players? I see only 11 players that play for themselves."

The former Chelsea, Juventus and Inter Milan coach had been in charge of the north London club for just over 16 months, guiding them to an unexpected fourth-placed finish in the Premier League to qualify for this year's Champions League.

However, form this season has left a lot to be desired, and Spurs were knocked out of Europe by AC Milan earlier this month, as well as embarrassingly eliminated from the FA Cup by Championship side Sheffield United just a week prior.

He also faced a difficult 12 months off the field, suffering the tragic loss of three close friends, as well as undergoing gallbladder surgery himself.

Confirming the news via the club's website, the Italian leaves with immediate effect with assistant coach Cristian Stellini stepping up to take the reigns until the end of the season.

Ryan Mason will act as Stellini's assistant.

His departure means Spurs are now searching for their fourth permanent manager in as many years since sacking Mauricio Pochettino back in 2019.

Speaking on the matter, chairman Daniel Levy stated everyone at the club "all needed to pull together".

"We have 10 Premier League games remaining and we have a fight on our hands for a Champions League place. We all need to pull together.

"Everyone has to step up to ensure the highest possible finish for our Club and amazing, loyal supporters."

Former boss Pochettino remains the fans' preferred choice to take over from Conte, with the likes of Julian Nagelsmann, Roberto De Zerbi and Paulo Fonseca all known to have admirers among Tottenham's decision-makers.

Tottenham next play Everton in the Premier League on April 3rd. The club currently sits fourth in the table with 49 points from 28 games, having played two games more than Newcastle in fifth and Liverpool in sixth.
