Match report

The Magpies started the game on the front foot and came close to taking the lead after 16 minutes played when Nick Woltemade’s header flashed over the bar following an excellent free-kick played into the box.

However, the game’s first shot on target came from the hosts just before the half-hour mark as Mateus Mané did well to shoot quickly on the turn, although his effort was straight at Nick Pope.

Despite having to soak up a lot of pressure in the latter stages of the first half, Hugo Bueno almost edged Wolves in front on the stroke of HT, but his 12-yard effort was steered narrowly wide.

With the score goalless at the interval, Rob Edwards will have been very encouraged by how competitive and organised his side was, which saw the visitors fail to register a single shot on target.

As the rain continued to pour down in the West Midlands after HT, the match struggled to get going with neither side able to take the game by the scruff of the neck as the second half progressed.

In an effort to unlock Wolves’ defence, Eddie Howe brought on Lewis Miley, Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa with a quarter of the match left to play. With just over 10 minutes remaining, Newcastle won a free-kick in a dangerous position but, to the home fans' relief, Kieran Trippier’s attempt could only ripple the side-netting.

The closing stages of the match saw the Magpies throw everything at Wolves to claim a late winner, but José Sá came to the hosts’ rescue with two good saves to deny Bruno Guimarães and Joelinton.

After collecting a point on the road, Eddie Howe’s side have leapfrogged arch-rivals Sunderland into eighth position in the PL table, but a return of just two wins in 11 away league games this season is undermining their top-four push. Despite an upturn in fortunes, Wolves remain bottom of the league and sit 14 points adrift of safety.

Post-match comments

Wolves boss Rob Edwards says his side are "making some good steps forward" with the extension of their undefeated run.

"A really solid performance, really committed and we showed a lot of spirit," he told BBC Match of the Day.

"Newcastle are obviously a very good team. I thought without the ball we had lots of control. When we had to attack we did, we looked a threat on the counter-attack.

"It was a really committed performance. People will look at results and think it has clicked all of a sudden, but performances were there before that.

"They have got very good players but overall the game went how we expected it to. I am really pleased with the clean sheet, we don't give much away.

"We are not there yet, we understand there is a lot of work still. The boys are with it, the crowd were with us all throughout the game.

"We are making some good steps forward."

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe praised Wolves for the way they defended, but felt his side were without their "cutting edge".

"We controlled the game but we didn't have the cutting edge today. Chance creation was an issue," he told BBC Match of the Day.

"They defended well, very low, compact and it was difficult for us to find space. We were looking for a moment of magic from individual brilliance or set play. We had the opportunities as the game went on but we didn't take them.

"The endeavour was there, the effort was there, but maybe the quality wasn't in the final third. It was a game where we had possession and tried to find a way through and I think we did better the longer we went on. We were just looking for a moment and we didn't take it.

"When you get a point, you see the negative but later on you maybe see the positive, who knows. It was a strong performance today just without the goalmouth action."
