Jack Grealish is ineligible for Everton this weekend but the Merseyside club continue to grow in confidence that they will clinch a permanent deal for him.

It has been a good start to the season for Grealish since he made a loan switch from Manchester City - and he is currently recharging his batteries.

Grealish was not selected by England for international duty and he will not be able to play in the Premier League’s next game week when play resumes this weekend, because Everton face his parent club.

The pause in his season gives a chance to reflect on his return to form since he left Pep Guardiola’s side and went looking for a regular starting role in the English top-flight.

Grealish has created 17 chances this season and has four assists and one goal from his seven league outings so far. The Toffees are delighted with the influence he has had both on and off the pitch - and believe they are in a strong position to sign him.

As part of his agreement, Everton have a permanent option to sign him for £50million. The feeling right now is that they will not trigger that agreement, as he could yet move for less.

Sources claim that Grealish is enjoying life at Everton to such an extent that he would even choose to stay with them ahead of joining any other club with a higher standing at the end of the season.

At this stage, Grealish wants to play with freedom and a smile on his face and putting joy over club status is key.

But Everton are putting a project in place that should help him believe he can still achieve more in the game anyway.

They are rebooting the club, and we understand they are on the lookout for a defender and forward in the January window that will further boost their season and long-term ambitions.

And that comes on top of the fact that Jordan Pickford has just committed himself to a new big-money four-year contract.

These are good times at Everton, as they settle into a new home stadium and play with a new sense of freedom under David Moyes.

They will miss Grealish when they face City at the weekend - but the fact they might well have him for the long-term is evidence of just how far they have come since last season’s struggles.
