The Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool has been postponed four hours before kick-off due to the effects of Storm Darragh.

Liverpool were due to travel to Goodison Park for the last time in the Premier League on Saturday lunchtime with Everton set to move to their new stadium on Bramley-Moore Dock next season.

But dangerous conditions caused by the storm led local authorities to call off the match in the interest of supporter safety.

"We apologise for the inconvenience caused and thank supporters for their understanding. Whilst we appreciate this will be deeply disappointing for supporters, the safety of fans, staff and players is of paramount importance," an Everton statement read.

"Information relating to a rearranged date for the fixture will be announced in due course. All tickets purchased for the original fixture will remain valid for the rearranged fixture."

Storm Darragh brought out an amber weather warning from the Met Office with wind gusts predicted to reach up to 70mph in inland areas around Merseyside.

The Premier League fixture is not the only sporting event affected by the storm, which has caused havoc across the United Kingdom and left thousands without power.

Two games in the Championship have fallen victim to the storm with Cardiff's home match with Watford and Plymouth against Oxford called off.

Bristol Rovers' fixture against Bolton in League One was also cancelled while no matches will be played in Wales.

Race meetings at Aintree and Chepstow have also been abandoned.
