Tottenham Hotspur’s decision to part ways with long-serving chairman Daniel Levy has sent shockwaves through the Premier League.

But beyond the seismic change at boardroom level, the focus is quickly shifting to what this means for the club’s transfer ambitions - and the name Rafael Leao is already being whispered as a signpost of what is to come.

In the final days of the summer window, Spurs made an ambitious enquiry for the AC Milan forward.

At the time, it was a move that felt out of reach. Leao remains central to Milan’s current plans and commands a fee over £100m.

Yet the very fact Tottenham tested the waters has taken on new significance in light of Levy’s departure.

Sources suggest Leao embodies the type of marquee talent Spurs now aspire to target - dynamic, explosive, and capable of carrying the club’s brand on and off the pitch.

Inside the club, Levy’s exit after nearly 25 years at the club is being framed as a step into a new era. Tottenham’s vast stadium and growing commercial clout have long promised a platform for elite-level recruitment, but spending restraint has too often left them a step short. That may now be set to change.

The Leao approach, however unrealistic at the time, offered a glimpse of that ambition.

It was Tottenham daring to think bigger, to look for a poster boy rather than a stop-gap. With a fresh strategy expected to take shape over the next two years, fans are being told to expect more of the same calibre of names on future shortlists.

Whether or not it is Leao in 2026, the message is clear that Spurs want to start looking at superstars, not just squad players. This week’s upheaval might just be the next phase of that shift.
