We are at the third Gameweek of the 2025/26 season, and Fantasy Premier League managers continue to jostle for position so early on in the campaign.

Best Midfielder: Mohamed Salah v Arsenal (H) - 7.4 predicted points

Once again, we see Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah top the AI rankings as the best captain pick, despite having a tricky fixture on paper at home to Arsenal. He is the only premium player to have produced an attacking return in each of the opening two gameweeks.

Arsenal will likely be tough to break down, having kept two clean sheets in two. They’ve not conceded a single big chance on their goal during this period. But Liverpool are among the top attacking teams in the league, scoring a leading seven goals across the opening two games.

Salah has a solid record against the Gunners too, having scored against them on the last three occasions that they’ve visited Anfield, with 3.5 goals scored per game on average. The stars could align for another Salah haul in this game.

Midfield Gem: Dango Ouattara v Sunderland (A) - 5.4 predicted points

Dango Ouattara impressed on his debut for Brentford in Gameweek 2, having signed from Bournemouth in the summer. He scored the only goal of the game against Aston Villa to earn a crucial three points for his new employers.

He made four tackles, five clearances, blocks and interceptions, plus six ball recoveries to earn 15 defensive contributions too. That landed him the two-point bonus, plus three bonus points, meaning a solid 13-point return.

Up next for the Bees is a trip to Sunderland, who have had an unpredictable start to the campaign. They beat West Ham on the opening weekend, as the Stadium of Light embraced their Premier League return, but then faltered on the road against fellow promoted team Burnley.

Best Forward: Erling Haaland v Brighton (A) - 6.6 predicted points

Erling Haaland fell short in Gameweek 2, when he failed to produce an attacking return in the 2-0 defeat to Spurs at the Etihad. He was a popular captain pick going into that game and will remain so for the trip to Brighton this weekend.

His underlying numbers suggest there’s high potential still there. He currently leads the way for both big chances on goal (4) and expected goals (2.48) among all players, which suggests more attacking returns might be just around the corner.

It’s Brighton up next for Manchester City, a side who have taken just one point from their opening two fixtures. Haaland has never blanked against them in five Premier League starts, with five goals and one assist.

Forward Gem: Jean-Philippe Mateta v Aston Villa (A) - 5.3 predicted points

Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta remains a firm favourite among the AI predictions, despite starting the season with successive blanks. Following another busy European midweek, they travel to Villa Park to face a side without a goal this season.

Mateta will be looking to prosper in this fixture, as he has done previously, with a goal in the home game and an assist on the road last season. He’s seen plenty of minutes so far this season and has hit double digits for goals in successive seasons.

The departure of Eberechi Eze to Arsenal does weaken this Crystal Palace attack. However, we should now see Mateta as the undisputed penalty taker. He remains a differential in the game, in just 8% of teams, with 100,000 managers opting to sell him this week.
