17:58 BST - Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris hailed his side's "resilience and discipline" as they weathered a first-half storm from Sheffield United.
He told Sky Sports: "It was a weird game. We didn't start it well, we were maybe a bit nervous.
"We knew before they could be clinical and they were.
"This game represents the way we have played this season: with resilience, with discipline."
17:40 BST - While it's sheer joy for Sunderland, it's a world of pain for Sheffield United, whose 100-year Wembley hurt continues.
They are just the second team to fail to reach the Premier League, having hit 90 regular-season points after Leeds last season.
17:36 BST - Sunderland's departing hero Tom Watson said it was "written" for him to score the Wembley winner in the Championship play-off final.
Watson, 19, told Sky Sports: "I can't really put it into words… it's unbelievable.
"We'll see each other next year in the Premier League, in the big time.
"I've been thinking about this for weeks, I think it was written, I couldn't have pictured it any better."
17:30 BST - The final match stats from a dramatic afternoon at Wembley. Two shots on target and two goals for Regis Le Bris' Sunderland is all it took.

17:15 BST - What a sensational way to bid your goodbye to Sunderland. Confirmed to be joining Brighton next week, substitute Tom Watson could hardly have picked a better moment to sign off – his goal and final touch for the club propelling them into the Premier League.
17:08 BST - FULL-TIME! SUNDERLAND ARE PROMOTED TO THE PREMIER LEAGUE!
Absolutely incredible stuff from Sunderland, who complete a turnaround to stun Sheffield United 2-1 and make their way back to the top flight after eight years away.
The departing Tom Watson is the stoppage-time hero for the Black Cats, providing the parting gift of all parting gifts.
Sheffield United will be absolutely heartbroken and will be wondering how this one got away, considering how comfortable they were through most of it.
Check out the match report of the Championship play-off final here.
17:01 BST - GOAL! Sunderland lead in stoppage time! Tom Watson is gifted an opportunity and he takes it with an emphatic finish to fire the Black Cats into a stunning lead with just minutes remaining!
Wembley erupts and all of a sudden, Sunderland are moments away from the Premier League...

15:09 BST - Sunderland are forced into an early change and it's a big blow for the Black Cats as they lose Luke O'Nien to a shoulder injury. The defender is handed oxygen as he departs and is replaced by Chris Mepham.
They haven't conceded, but this is definitely not the start Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris would have wanted.
15:04 BST - WHAT A SAVE! Sunderland are put under the cosh by Sheffield United already and Anthony Paterson bails them out with a stunning stop down low to claw away Kieffer Moore's header.
15:01 BST - Here we go! The Premier League awaits one of Sheffield United or Sunderland...
14:57 BST - National anthem? Check. Handshakes? Check. It's nearly go time at a raucous Wembley in this high-stakes encounter.
14:32 BST - Wembley is a very unhappy hunting ground for Sheffield United, who haven't won there in 100 years. Their play-off record doesn't have great reading either, having failed to advance in nine previous attempts.
For Sunderland, they are seeking a fifth promotion to the Premier League, which would draw them level with Norwich, West Brom, Leicester and Burnley for the most.
14:15 BST - Let's have a look at the team news ahead of this all-important clash this afternoon:
