Pep Guardiola has criticised Leeds United supporters who booed Manchester City’s Muslim players as they paused to break their Ramadan fast during Saturday’s Premier League clash at Elland Road.

The match was briefly halted at sunset to allow Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rayan Cherki and Omar Marmoush to take on fluids, following a message displayed on the stadium’s big screen.

Some home fans reacted negatively to the stoppage, prompting Guardiola to call for greater tolerance and respect for different religions in modern society.

"It is a modern world, right? (You see) what is happening in the world today. Respect religion, diversity, that is the point,” he told the media.

“The Premier League says you can have one or two minutes, you can have for the (fasting) players to do it (break their fast). It is what it is, unfortunately.

“Of course they (the players) know it. We took on a little bit of vitamins because Cherki, Ait-Nouri did not eat today. No more than that. The question is, can they do it or not? What is the problem?"
