Match report

Having managed just one victory in their previous six meetings with the Bees, Brighton sought to impose themselves in difficult conditions from the outset.

Brentford stopper Caoimhín Kelleher was alert on the greasy surface, producing a sharp low save after Yankuba Minteh’s trickery inside the area carved out a shooting lane for Mats Wieffer to fire towards the bottom corner.

With rain falling steadily throughout, the conditions posed an additional hazard and ultimately proved costly for the hosts. Carlos Baleba’s extended sliding challenge felled Dango Ouattara inside the area, leaving Chris Kavanagh with little choice but to hand Brentford a penalty.

Marksman Igor Thiago stepped up and calmly sent Bart Verbruggen the wrong way, to net his ninth PL goal of the campaign.

Only Erling Haaland has found the net more times in the PL this season than Thiago and Welbeck. Just days short of his 35th birthday, the latter squandered a chance to add to his tally and cancel out the Brazilian's opener, blazing harmlessly over following a sustained period of second-half pressure from the Seagulls.

Brighton remained firmly on the front foot, though chances remained at a premium until Welbeck’s persistence leading the line finally paid off, as he slipped past his marker to poke Minteh’s delivery, in a single touch, beyond Kelleher.

The Seagulls completed the turnaround inside the final 10 minutes, when a failed clearance dropped to substitute Hinshelwood on the edge of the box, who drove through the rain, into the bottom corner.

A stoppage time penalty offered Brentford a last-gasp lifeline, but a tame effort from Thiago was comfortably held onto by Verbruggen, as Brighton boss Fabian Hürzeler watched his team claim a dramatic triumph on his 50th PL game in charge.
