Inter Milan are close to a breakthrough in their bid to sign Djed Spence from Tottenham, with talks progressing towards an agreement that would take the England international back to Serie A.

Sources indicate Inter are completely convinced Spence possesses the playing traits to become a success at the club, but it is not simply his ability on the pitch that has strengthened their belief.

Background checks into Spence’s character and personality have also left a strong impression on Inter’s recruitment team, with his calmness, determination and mindset identified as key qualities that could help him make a significant impact in Milan.

A deal worth €30 million (£25.6m) is being discussed as the two clubs work towards an agreement.

We revealed one month ago that Spence was seriously considering a move from Tottenham to Inter, having emerged from an impressive World Cup campaign with his reputation further enhanced.

Inter, meanwhile, have been searching for a long-term solution on the right following Denzel Dumfries’ move to Real Madrid over the summer.

They believe Spence has the versatility and attacking instincts to fill that void, while also providing the defensive qualities required at the highest level.

His loan spell at Genoa in 2024 played an important role in shaping that view.

Inter’s assessment of Spence has gone beyond statistics and performances, with his time in Serie A giving the club an understanding of how he handles the demands of Italian football and life away from England.

That experience, coupled with his ability to contribute at both ends of the pitch, has convinced Inter that he can fit naturally into their system.

As of Tuesday night, Tottenham were expected to give the green light to the transfer, with discussions now centred on the final terms of the deal.

With those negotiations advancing, there is growing confidence that Spence’s next chapter could be in Italy.
