Keith Andrews’ side thought they had taken the lead in the first half, only for Igor Thiago’s strike to be ruled out for offside.
Robin Roefs then produced a key moment, saving Kevin Schade’s penalty, but was eventually beaten in the 77th minute when Thiago’s header clipped the bar and crossed the line.
Sunderland hit back quickly, equalising just five minutes later as Enzo Le Fee calmly slotted home from the spot after Habib Diarra was fouled in the box.
With the game finely balanced at 1-1, Wilson Isidor completed the turnaround, rising to head in Granit Xhaka’s cross and send the Stadium of Light into wild celebrations.
“I am happy and we went until the end,” Le Bris said.
“We tried to win this game and it was really positive, the way we managed the game with two different halves.
“We controlled the first half without scoring or creating too many chances.
“The second half was chaotic, but these are two important parts of the same game. We showed a good ability to manage the second half and that was really positive.
“It was good for Wilson and his family - two incredible days.
“I told the players from the beginning of the season that we will have starters and finishers, and that was really important today because in the Premier League we are always on the edge.”
