Liverpool have submitted their first official bid for Alexander Isak, which has been immediately rejected by Newcastle United, according to reports in the media.
Isak has been training alone at the facilities of his former club, Real Sociedad, after he did not join Newcastle on their pre-season tour of South Korea. The club claimed he had a “thigh injury” in recent weeks to try and explain his absence.
The Swedish international’s 23 goals in the top-flight last season saw him become one of the leading strikers in the world, and now, according to The Athletic's David Ornstein, the Reds have submitted an ambitious bid for the forward that has been denied.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano also revealed more details on the deal that would become one of the biggest transfers in British history if it does go through.
“Liverpool's opening bid for Alexander Isak was worth £120m plus add-ons," he said on social media.
“Newcastle rejected as they won’t open doors until (they've found) a replacement… and it’s not guaranteed, at this stage.
“Isak insists on his clear desire to join Liverpool.”
Having already brought in Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for a mammoth £116m fee, manager Arne Slot is not afraid to splash the cash even further as he reaches into his deep pockets once more.
However, as reported, it does not matter how much money Liverpool throw at Isak - Newcastle must find a replacement first.
