Manchester United icon Antonio Valencia has joined Sunday League side Wythenshawe FC Vets.

Valencia joined United from Wigan Athletic in 2008 and went on to win two Premier League titles, one FA Cup, two EFL Cups and a Europa League during his time at Old Trafford as he established himself as a club legend.

He played 339 times for the club, scoring 25 times before leaving in the 2018/19 campaign when then manager Jose Mourinho handed him the armband for his final game.

Now, he joins Wythenshawe FC Vets, a side competing in the ninth tier of English football that fields a squad with a combined total exceeding 1,800 appearances in the top flight.

Announcing the news on Instagram, their statement read: "We're proud to welcome Premier League winner, Antonio Valencia to Wythenshawe Vets.

"A Manchester United legend. Title winner. Now wearing our badge. Welcome to the club, Antonio!"

The squad also includes familiar faces such as England international Emile Heskey, Danny Drinkwater, Stephen Ireland, Joleon Lescott, Nedum Onuoha, Marc Albrighton, Jefferson Montero, Cameron Jerome and Papiss Cisse.

Since retiring in May 2021, Valencia has made several appearances for United’s Legends team but will now fight for his place in a side full of former Premier League stars who have guided the side to immense success over the past few years.

Eight-time Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt has also expressed his desire to become part of the Wythenshawe project after trying his hand at football in the past with the likes of Borussia Dortmund.

"Listen, I'm ready. I'm ready. If I get into some shape, I'm ready to go."
