The Brazilian arrived at Old Trafford from the Santiago Bernabeu in 2022, and now - as he prepares to leave as a free agent at the end of the season - there is a possibility United could turn back to the Spanish giants to help fill the role he leaves behind.
Finding a player to take the Casemiro role is the initial priority at Old Trafford, but United plan to sign at least two central midfielders.
Sources suggest both Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni are among the names United would consider as part of the midfield upgrade programme set to take place this summer.
And the uncertainty surrounding Madrid’s squad build is intriguing. It is considered possible that one of Camavinga or Tchouameni could leave Madrid, particularly if the club makes a major signing in central midfield of their own.

Enzo Fernandez, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Adam Wharton, Rodri and Vitinha are among the names to have been mentioned as potential targets for Madrid in the summer of 2026.
That creates intrigue around the futures of Camavinga and Tchouameni. Interestingly, United have been long-term admirers of both players and previously explored signing them before their moves to Spain.
Both players ultimately turned down United at the time, opting for Madrid instead.
It remains the case that Man Utd will aim to sign one of their midfield players from within the Premier League but United are keeping an open mind about where else they source quality additions from, and they are keeping a close watch on Spain for top talent as the season approaches its key stages.
