Joshua Zirkzee’s future at Manchester United remains shrouded in uncertainty, even after the shock departure of Ruben Amorim from the Old Trafford hot seat.

And a transfer to AS Roma remains a possibility.

The Dutch forward has endured a frustrating spell since arriving from Bologna in 2024, struggling to carve out a consistent role and leaving him increasingly open to the idea of a January exit.

This season, in particular, has tested both player and club, with Zirkzee making quiet but significant progress behind the scenes in pushing for a move away.

Roma emerged as the most serious suitors over the course of December, and must now remain hopeful over the direction of internal discussions at Old Trafford in the coming days.

The Serie A side have been monitoring the situation closely and there has been growing concern in Italy that United’s change of manager will complicate matters.

Roma fear Manchester United may decide the 24-year-old forward deserves an extended chance, effectively slamming the door shut on a winter deal.

And as a result of that feeling, Roma are keeping alive a list of alternative options.

However, Flashscore sources insist Zirkzee himself remains firmly attracted to the idea of a move to the Italian capital.

We understand he has been signalling privately that his stance has not changed and that he would welcome a deal to progress.

Roma have paused contact in the immediate aftermath of Amorim’s exit, allowing the dust to settle and emotions to cool.

But they have known for over a month that Zirkzee was keen on the switch, and within recent hours they have been informed that the deal could still be viable - if the player gets his wish.

Manchester United face Burnley today, and once that fixture is out of the way, attention at Old Trafford is expected to turn back to pressing internal matters - including the shape of the squad for the remainder of the season.

For now, nothing is decided but the door to Rome may not yet be closed for Zirkzee.

Roma hope they get news that the player is still allowed to make his move.
