Man Utd v Tottenham betting tips
Man Utd to score first @ 4/7 (bet365)
Odds courtesy of bet365. Correct at the time of publication and subject to change.
Result - Man Utd win
My first suggested bet at Old Trafford comes from the match-winner market, taking Manchester United to make home advantage count.
The locals are winless in three EPL starts, following two draws and a defeat. That’s poor, by United’s standards, but they’re up against an opponent bottom of the league and devoid of confidence. Only three top-tier teams have yet to win a match: Bournemouth, Fulham, and Tottenham Hotspur.
Spurs have scored just two goals and conceded eight. Only Coventry City have a worse goal difference. Tottenham have played two away games so far, losing 3-0 to Brentford before ending goalless with Nottingham Forest.
Spurs fans won’t find much comfort in the stats either. The Londoners lost 2-0 here back in February, beaten by goals from Mbeumo and Fernandes.
It gets worse.
Tottenham have lost 25 league matches at Old Trafford. Only one club has a worse record, and that’s Everton’s 26 losses at Arsenal. Add to that the fact Spurs have suffered one of their worst starts in the club’s history, last losing their opening six matches in 1955, and we have a strong bet.
Man Utd are no world-beaters at present, but home advantage against an opponent that’s bottom of the league and struggling for goals makes them an easy pick.
Tip: Man Utd win @ 4/6 (bet365)
Bet explanation: If Man Utd beat Tottenham at Old Trafford, you’ll beat the bookies and make a profit.
Team to score first - Man Utd
Another interesting bet ahead of Saturday evening’s match is for Man Utd to score first.
You’re not concerned about which player scores or when. The result isn’t important either. As long as the home team scores to make it 1-0 at any stage of the match, your bet wins.
The Red Devils played five matches in September and scored first against Everton in the EPL, Sabah FK in the Champions League, and Brighton in the League Cup.
Tottenham played four times last month and failed to score first in any. They ended 0-0 at Forest, 0-0 vs Everton, went 1-0 down at Anfield inside 21 minutes, and found themselves a goal down at the break when hosting Aston Villa.
Man Utd played Tottenham twice last season and took the lead both times. It took just 32 minutes to break the deadlock in North London, and 38 minutes at this venue eight months ago.
If Man Utd do as expected and score first, the stats give them an excellent chance of winning. Tottenham have failed to win any of their last 37 league games in which they conceded the opening goal.
Tip: Man Utd to score first @ 4/7 (bet365)
Bet explanation: Man Utd must score to make it 1-0 at Old Trafford to secure bettors a profit.
Score - Bryan Mbeumo
My third and final bet is for lovers of higher odds: Bryan Mbeumo to score at any time in the match.
Why do I like this bet? Well, there are a few strong reasons.
Mbeumo has had seven goal contributions in his previous six meetings with Saturday’s opponents. The 27-year-old attacker has scored six and provided one assist in that time. He made it 1-0 in 38 minutes on Tottenham’s last visit.
Mbeumo has featured in all five of his team’s Premier League games so far, scoring two goals. He got off the mark in that impressive 5-2 home win over Ipswich, and quickly doubled his tally at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
You can back Mbeumo to score first against Tottenham at an eye-catching 6/1. I’m sure that will be popular, and I certainly wouldn’t put anyone off betting on that one for a small stake. However, I prefer the safety net offered by the anytime scorer market.
It’s a real value-for-money play, with your bet live for the entire time Bryan is on the field of play. A goal scored inside 60 seconds with his first touch pays the same as Mbeumo scoring late in the day.
Mbeumo got 90 minutes against Fulham before the international break. The five shots at goal and three chances created show he had opportunities to score.
What about his last league game at Old Trafford?
Mbeumo played 90 minutes in a 1-0 defeat to Man City, recording three shots and two chances created.
Place your Mbeumo to score anytime wager at bet365, and with odds of 8/5, you’ll enjoy the sportsbook’s ‘Sub Play On’ promotion. If Mbeumo is subbed during Saturday’s match with Tottenham, your stake rolls onto his replacement, keeping you involved.
Tip: Mbeumo to score @ 8/5 (bet365)
Bet explanation: You need Mbeumo to score for Man Utd against Tottenham at Old Trafford.
