United were dominant throughout against Burnley and will be disappointed to only take a point.

Match report

The pre-match headlines were dominated by Amorim’s sacking by Manchester United, but with Darren Fletcher assuming interim charge, it was much of the same in the opening stages.

They even suffered the ignominy of falling behind against a side winless in 11 games in the opening stages, although there was a huge element for fortune in it as Bashir Humphreys’ cross looped up off the outstretched leg of Ayden Heaven and nestled into the far corner.

United’s response was fairly muted, although they did test Martin Dúbravka in the Burnley goal midway through the half when the returning Bruno Fernandes planted a perfect cross onto the head of Benjamin Šeško which he could only head straight at Dúbravka.

United thought they’d hit back soon after when Matheus Cunha’s goalbound header was cleared off the line by the all-action Humphreys, before from the resulting corner, Lisandro Martínez swept home.

Unfortunately for the Argentine, the goal was swiftly disallowed for a foul on Kyle Walker in the build-up, which left Fletcher infuriated on the touchline.

It was all United prior to the HT whistle, and they twice came close to finding a first-half leveller through first Šeško, whose header produced a fine fingertip save from Dúbravka, before Manuel Ugarte flashed narrowly wide from inside the area.

It merely felt like a matter of time before United broke Burnley down, and that elusive goal arrived five minutes after the restart when Fernandes’ deft ball was swept into the far corner by Šeško.

It was wave after wave of attacks on the Clarets goal in the early stages of the second half, with Fernandes crashing an effort off the post before Heaven incredibly headed wide from six yards.

Their incessant pressure eventually told on the hour mark when Šeško - a man Amorim failed to get a tune out of - burst across the near post and guided home a perfect effort to convert Patrick Dorgu’s cross.

But in typical United fashion, they were soon pegged back when substitute Jaidon Anthony curled home a sumptuous left-footed effort from just inside the area.

United had opportunities to win the game in the closing stages, with academy graduate Shea Lacey coming close when he rifled an effort against the crossbar before another of his long-range strikes whistled wide.

In the end they were forced to settle for a point which did little to boost their top-four hopes, nor did a point do anything for Burnley besides extend their winless run to 12 matches.

Post-match comments

Manchester United striker Benjamin Sesko to BBC Sport: "It helps me for my confidence but also to the team, which for me it is the most important to help the team in every single situation.

"It's been tough, but now I finally did it, and I'm happy I could help the team. This is the most important thing for me, and now it's just up to me and up to us to keep going like that.

"I think the goal happens with the movements. This was really important too because I know I have great players beside me, it's just up to me to make good movement at the right time."
