Manchester United want to discover the true reasoning behind Bruno Fernandes’ media outburst.

The controversial quotes released on Tuesday in the Portuguese media raise fresh doubts over the players future at Old Trafford.

Some sources believe that Fernandes may be angling for a transfer after taking aim at the club in an interview with Canal 11, and United want to learn more about why he made his comments.

Fernandes talked about loyalty and perception of players over the age of 30 as he talked about the fact he could have moved to Saudi Arabia for “much more money”.

He says a chat with Ruben Amorim helped keep him at the club but that from the club side, he felt they had the attitude of: “If you go, it’s not that bad for us.”

He claims that moment hurt him and also claimed that “for them, money is more important than anything.”

By claiming that United were willing to sell him to Saudi Arabia club Al Hilal, Fernandes has angered club officials, with some close to the club even describing how the interview draws similarity to Mohamed Salah’s recent rant against Liverpool.

United insist they never planned to sell Fernandes and that he is part of their future.

Yet the comments also raise questions over whether he is considering his own future.

Internal conversations will take place, and inevitably, there will be even more focus on the future of the club’s midfield and how they rebuild.

We have been reporting on Flashscore how the club already plan to sign two midfielders in 2026, but are struggling to land top targets.

Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton and Carlos Baleba have been identified over the past year as players of particular interest but United are also having to identify other options.

Fernandes, 31, is club captain, and there was an expectation he would continue into the 2025/26 season.

However, sources do admit that the club have begun thinking about life after the Portuguese international and how he will be replaced.

Flashscore sources have revealed that Angelo Stiller is very much seen as a player that United admire as a Fernandes replacement.

They have scouted him and have detailed reports that could yet lead to advancements at the end of the season.

Internally, there have been considerations about Kobbie Mainoo taking over the starting role but that is complicated by his own personal feelings about the club, as he has requested to leave.

At a time when the futures of Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte are also unclear, this is a complicated time at Old Trafford.

But they will aim to resolve the Fernandes situation as quickly as possible, while addressing their own transfer plans as a case of urgency.
