Back in May, Fenerbahce coach Mourinho denied reports he had held talks with Portugal's Football Federation executives to become national team manager.
Reports claimed that he would leave the Turkish giants at the end of last season and replace Portugal coach Roberto Martinez after the UEFA Nations League finals in June.
Mourinho wants to manage a side in Portugal
Mourinho commented on the matter at the time and revealed that he wants to manage in Portugal when he is at his peak which he clearly does not think he is at right now.
"I'm definitely coming to Portugal. It hasn't happened yet, but it will," Mourinho told Sport TV after his team's 2-1 win in Thursday's preseason friendly against Portimonense in Albufeira, Portugal.
"Not because I feel like I'm nearing the end, I feel far from that. I don't want to come to Portugal for a golden retirement or for the last years of my career. I want to come to Portugal at the height of my career, in good health and physically and mentally strong. I'll definitely be back."
Managing Portugal is Mourinho's destiny
The former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss has now opened up not on managing in Portugal but instead managing the national team in a future World Cup which may potentially be in 2030 when it returns to Europe.
"I've been away from Portugal since 2004, and I don't think my country would accept me coaching a team other than my own. My destiny, in terms of internationals, is to play in a World Cup with the Portuguese national team. I never considered coaching the Brazilian national team.
"My first experience has to be with Portugal, and then people have to understand that I'm a professional and that I can coach other teams, but always teams with which I have something that connects me. Brazil, obviously, because of the historical relationship between our countries, England because it's my home, Italy, I worked there for several years, but my first experience with the national team has to be mine."
Last year he revealed that he had twice turned down the chance to coach Portugal, but if the opportunity crops up again he may not say no as 2030 draws closer.
