Signed for £79 million in the summer, Hugo Ekitike has wasted no time proving his worth. The French striker struck on his debut in the Community Shield and added goals in each of his first two Premier League outings, instantly emerging as Liverpool’s breakout star of the season.

From Reims to Anfield glory

Born on June 20th, 2002, in Reims, France, Hugo Ekitike carries a unique heritage. His father hails from Cameroon, and his mother is French. Football was part of his childhood from the age of five, when he began kicking a ball at local club Cormontreuil FC. By 11, he was already in the Reims academy, where his blend of height, speed, and technical touch began to stand out.

Despite his rapid rise, Ekitike has kept his life remarkably simple. Family remains at the centre of his world. Before matches, he often calls his brother or mother to calm his nerves. Those close ties have shaped him into a player who values humility over showmanship, something Liverpool supporters have already noticed.

Basketball and 'the new Henry'

Ekitike's footballing inspirations include Karim Benzema, whose intelligence and movement Hugo studies obsessively, and Kylian Mbappe, another French forward who blazed a trail for the next generation.

Observers have also drawn parallels with Thierry Henry, especially in his dribbling style and elegance on the ball. Away from the pitch, he is a fan of rap music, American football, and basketball, often citing Kobe Bryant as a role model for mental resilience.

Style on the pitch

Standing around 190cm, Ekitike combines physical presence with fluid movement and pressing energy.

Coaches have praised his ability to create space, link play, and trouble defences with intelligent runs. While he still has room to improve in finishing consistency and physical duels, his dynamism and work ethic make him one of Europe’s most exciting young forwards.

Ekitike also looks great in data analysis. During last season with Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga, he excelled in xG and xA metrics (expected goals and expected assists). The sum of both metrics was 26.61 for him. Moreover, he almost fulfilled this expected value – he scored 15 goals and had eight assists.

Future at Anfield

Liverpool secured Ekitike in July for a fee rising to £79 million (including bonuses), a move some saw as risky. Yet the Frenchman has immediately justified the investment, scoring in the Community Shield and delivering goals against Bournemouth and Newcastle. He became the first Liverpool player since Daniel Sturridge in 2013 to score in each of his first three appearances.

With such a blazing start, Ekitike is not just filling the role many thought required an Alexander Isak-type signing - he is redefining it. And with every goal and every run, he brings back echoes of Henry, the French legend to whom he is increasingly compared.
