Aston Villa remain winless after their first five Premier League games of the season, currently sitting down in 18th with just three points.
Sunderland were reduced to ten men in the 33rd minute after left-back Reinildo Mandava kicked out at Matty Cash.
Cash then gave Villa the lead, their first Premier League goal of the season, with a fantastic long-range effort.
Wilson Isidor continued his impressive start to life in the English top flight with a 75th-minute equaliser, allowing Sunderland to hold on and secure a point.
Speaking to the press after the game, a visibly frustrated Emery couldn’t help but tear into his ‘lazy’ players.
"We were lazy sometimes. Lazy. The goal we conceded, we were lazy. Perhaps that’s because we didn’t play in our style," he said.
