Palace were able to withstand plenty of West Ham pressure in the second half to pick up all three points.

Match report

Despite the empty seats and negativity in the stands at the London Stadium, West Ham took the early initiative in this capital derby, with Crysencio Summerville heavily involved.

His surging run earned an early corner, which Palace did well to clear, though that was their only real threat in the opening 15 minutes.

Four corners in succession from the visitors came to nothing, and a congested midfield made it difficult for either side to get a foothold. In particular, Adam Wharton’s errant ball forward when under pressure typified their difficulties.

One shot on target after half an hour told the story of the half, though Palace’s Daichi Kamada and Yeremy Pino will be rueing the fact they were unable to get a clean connection on half-chances to open the scoring.

It wouldn’t be long before they could celebrate, as the south Londoners’ sixth corner caused confusion, and Jean-Philippe Mateta headed home his 50th goal for the club.

Summerville and Callum Wilson gave the hosts some attacking impetus in the lead up to the break without ever looking likely to register, and the boos which greeted the players as they walked off evidenced the home support’s continued frustration.

Within a minute of the second half starting, Palace’s Maxence Lacroix powered a header against the crossbar as the Hammers again failed to deal with a corner, and in the next passage of play, Jarrod Bowen stooped to guide home the equaliser from a set-piece of their own.

That saw the decibel levels rise and a much more purposeful West Ham as they took control of possession and the game by the scruff of the neck.

Both Lucas Paquetá and Kyle Walker-Peters went close as pressure continued to build on Dean Henderson’s goal.

But the Eagles were never out of it, and produced a sucker punch when Tyrick Mitchell arrived unmarked at the far post.

He was given time and space to fire home an exquisite volley into the roof of the net. Mitchell should also have added a second soon after, but fired off target when he had the whole goal to aim at.

Surprisingly, however, the hosts weren’t making any real effort to get forward, and the lack of purpose ultimately saw them lose a game which ensured a seventh trip to the London Stadium without defeat for Palace (W4, D3).
