A piece of Brazilian magic lit up the Vitality Stadium, as Bournemouth rescued a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa on the South Coast, extending their unbeaten league run to five games (W3, D2) in the process.

Amine Adli linked up well with Alex Scott for the first chance in this one, but Amadou Onana reacted quickly to deflect his shot.

Eli Junior Kroupi then had a pair of chances as the hosts’ breezy start continued, with a lob that was cleared off the line by Ezri Konsa – albeit with Kroupi offside – before the 19-year-old French forward side-footed a free kick wide.

Having ridden out this early storm, Villa gained a foothold around the 20-minute mark with Ollie Watkins putting the ball in the net, but he was offside from Morgan Rogers’ pass.

However, just a couple of minutes later, Unai Emery’s men got the better of Đorđe Petrović, and this one counted.

Rogers was picked out in space in the box by a neat Jadon Sancho pass, and the England international rifled the ball high into the roof of the net from a narrow angle to open the scoring.

Despite this setback, the Cherries had chances before the break, with Emiliano Martínez making an excellent double save from Scott and Evanilson, before Rayan’s header came off the bar from the resulting corner after a misplayed clearance from Rogers.

Having come so close to a goal just before the break, Rayan lit up the Vitality Stadium 10 minutes into the second half with a goal on his home debut.

Signed in January from Vasco da Gama, the 19-year-old Brazilian picked up the ball on the right midway inside the Villa half and drove inside.

He then skipped past a non-existent challenge from Lucas Digne and drilled a low, hard shot past Martínez at his near post to draw the hosts level.

Bournemouth were buoyed by this and, moments later, Adli drew some “oohs” from the home fans as he whistled a shot wide while Kroupi’s well-taken goal was flagged for offside long before he put the ball in the net.

From there, Andoni Iraola’s men laid siege to the Villa goal with a barrage of corners, before sub Ryan Christie forced a stunning save from Martínez with ten minutes to go.

The Scotland international’s effort from the edge of the box looked destined for the top corner, but a flying save from the Villa keeper tipped the ball over.

Once again, the Argentinian stopper repelled Christie as the clock ticked down. Christie met Evanilson’s delivery with a scissor kick that was batted away.

Ultimately, the Villans held on for a point and duly remain in third place, although they have now registered just one win in five Premier League games (W1, D2, L2).
