Newcastle's Sandro Tonali has been charged with misconduct in relation to alleged breaches of the FA's betting rules, according to a press release made by the governing body on Thursday afternoon.

"It's alleged that the Newcastle United midfielder breached FA Rule E8 50 times by placing bets on football matches between 12 August 2023 and 12 October 2023," the FA charge reads.

"Sandro Tonali has until 5 April 2024 to respond."

The FA's charges relate to 50 betting breaches during the midfielder's time at Newcastle, with the governing body alleging Tonali broke rules by placing bets on matches between August 12th and October 12th, 2023.

Tonali joined Newcastle from AC Milan in July for £55 million.

His current club released a statement saying they "acknowledge a misconduct charge received by Sandro Tonali in respect of alleged breaches of FA Betting Rules.

"Sandro continues to fully comply with relevant investigations and he retains the club's full support.

"Due to this ongoing process, Sandro and Newcastle United are unable to offer further comment at this time."

The charge comes as the Italian international is currently in the midst of a 10-month ban for similar betting-related charges placed on him by the Italian Football Federation prior to his move to the Premier League side.

The 23-year-old had admitted to placing bets on matches which were made while he was playing for former clubs Milan and Brescia, and he has been undergoing rehabilitation as part of his previous punishment.
