Sunderland are returning to the Premier League after eight years away and are assembling an interesting squad in their bid for survival.

Halfway through the transfer window, the Black Cats have confirmed six new signings with a blend of youth and experience.

Sunderland have also had to deal with the departures of Jobe Bellingham (£26.4 million to Borussia Dortmund) and Tommy Watson (£10m to Brighton), which has in turn aided their spending.

Habib Diarra (21 years old, £27.2m)

The talented Diarra became the Black Cats' record signing early in the window. The central midfielder, who came through Strasbourg's youth ranks and gradually worked his way up to become captain, joined for a reported £27.2m or 30m euros.

The Senegal international started 30 games in Ligue 1 last season, scoring four goals and notching five assists.

"It's a family club that really suits me and fits me perfectly. I believe it's really the best move for me to move on in my career. I'm proud to represent Sunderland and give this club everything I have in me," he said in an interview with the club website.

Simon Adingra (23, £20.7m)

Manager Regis Le Bris would've wanted players with Premier League experience, and winger Simon Adingra fits the bill, having racked up 60 starts in two years for Brighton.

He is also a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations winner with the Ivory Coast, getting both assists in a 2-1 win in the final against Nigeria, where he was named the Young Player of the Tournament.

Enzo Le Fee (25, £19.9m)

The French midfielder's six-month loan worked out well as Sunderland were promoted, thus triggering a permanent deal.

AS Roma received £19.9m, and the Black Cats kept the midfielder who played an integral role in their play-off campaign.

"I said before the play-off final that my heart was in Sunderland. I wanted to stay and that's why it was the most important game of my life. Together we did it. Since I came here, I have enjoyed the football, my teammates and our fans," said Le Fee.

"We have had an incredible experience and now we have to take the next step."

Chemsdine Talbi (20, £17.3m)

Club Brugge are renowned for producing promising players who can establish themselves on the big stage.

Talbi could be one of them, and he was considered one of the biggest talents in Belgium last season.

He also excelled in the Champions League, where he managed to score twice against Atalanta.

Noah Sadiki (20, £14.7m)

Belgium has proved to be a lucrative area for Sunderland, as evidenced by the signing of Sadiki alongside Talbi.

The 20-year-old midfielder featured 70 times for Royale Union SG and arrives in England as another highly-rated talent.

He also featured in the Europa League and has made starts for the Democratic Republic of Congo's national team.

Sadiki has won the Jupiler Pro League as well as the Belgian Cup and Super Cup, helping to secure a move to the Premier League.

Reinildo Mandava (31, free transfer)

Reinildo Mandava hails from Mozambique and signed on a free transfer after his contract expired with Atletico Madrid.

Although he increases the average age of the squad, the left-back will bring important experience that a young team needs.

"It's a dream come true because playing in the Premier League has always been my goal and I can't wait to play for a historic club like Sunderland," said Mandava.

He will become the first player from Mozambique to feature in the Premier League.
