Tottenham v Newcastle has make-or-break feel for under-fire Frank and Howe

Tottenham Hotspur v Newcastle United has always been one of those Premier League fixtures that can be relied upon to provide ample entertainment.

Not only goals, but a feast for the supporters in the ground or watching elsewhere, because they are two teams that enjoy playing attractive, passing football.

No goalless draws in league fixtures

Indeed, in the 61 previous Premier League meetings between the teams, there has never been a goalless draw. That record, along with the 196 goals scored across those fixtures - making it the fourth-highest-scoring fixture in PL history - is a testament to the footballing ethos of both clubs.

Clubs that have been intertwined over the years thanks to players that have played for both the Magpies and the Lilywhites - Les Ferdinand, David Ginola, Kieran Trippier, Jermaine Jenas, Scott Parker and many more.

It's a shame then to see both English top-flight stalwarts struggling so badly this season.

Spurs are currently on a seven-match winless run in the league, whilst Newcastle haven't won in five.

What that means in practice is that the visitors find themselves down in 12th place on 33 points, and the hosts in 14th on 29 points.

Form is nowhere near good enough

For clubs that arguably had aspirations of Champions League football next season, but who are 10 and 14 points away from that fourth UCL qualification place at present, that's nowhere near good enough.

The boos that now accompany the end of both teams' matches are a clear sign of the discontent on the terraces.

Eddie Howe has only recently experienced the Geordie faithful voicing their concerns over his management style, but Thomas Frank has had to deal with the barbs all season long, after a series of disappointing and below-par performances.

At this point, it would be a surprise to no one if the Dane soon fell on his sword, but were Newcastle's poor run to continue here, it's definitely worth asking the question as to whether this could be the make-or-break game for a manager who only last season brought the club its first major silverware in 70 years.

The Magpies are unbeaten in this fixture in the Premier League since December 2023, however, scoring 10 goals in the four games since then, and conceding just four.

Howe can at least look to a record against Frank that has seen him lose just one of the nine league encounters in which the two managers have faced each other.

Tottenham have actually lost five of their last seven against Newcastle, one fewer defeat than in the previous 23 meetings, though the Magpies have only won two of their last 15 away games.

The home/away form guide really offers nothing in terms of who might be considered a favourite for the win in North London, either. In fact, results are a mirror image of sorts.

That's because Spurs have only won two league games in their own stadium this season, drawing four and losing six, whilst Newcastle have only won two matches away from St. James' Park, drawing four and losing six.

Just four home wins in 26 games for Spurs

In fact, after winning four of their first five home league games at the beginning of last season, when Ange Postecoglou was in the dugout, the North Londoners have gone on to earn just four more wins from their last 26 games at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (D7 L15).

The visitors have at least won two of their last six EPL games against any opponent, drawing one and losing three, whilst the Lilywhites have drawn three and lost three of their last six.

Frank will continue to point to the injury list as the major reason for his team's struggles.

It's difficult to argue when he's unable to call upon James Maddison, Mo Kudus, Dejan Kulusevski, Lucas Bergvall, Rodrigo Bentancur, Ben Davies, Kevin Danso, Pedro Porro, Destiny Udogie and top scorer Richarlison.

Not to mention the loss of captain, Cristian Romero, for a few games after his straight red card at Old Trafford in the loss to Man Utd.

Newcastle's problems, thanks to the losses of Fabian Schar, Emil Krafth, Tino Livramento and Joelinton, are minuscule by comparison. Anthony Gordon and Lewis Miley will take late fitness tests to determine whether they'll play any part in this game or not.

One player that the visitors will continue to rely upon is their own captain, Bruno Guimaraes, who like Romero is a combative South American who leads by example.

Even when their backs are against the wall, Newcastle can count upon the battling spirit of the Brazilian, and it was he who opened the scoring in the reverse fixture in December. A game that was notable for Romero's two goals, one of which was a 95th-minute overhead kick.

It's a game full of promise, but whoever out of Frank and Howe comes up short on Tuesday night will understand that calls for their head will become relentless.
