Newcastle were dominant at home against Nottingham Forest, who rarely troubled Nick Pope's goal.

Match report

Roared on as ever by the home crowd, the Magpies started stronger with two chances falling to Joelinton.

The first came from a Kieran Trippier cross, which the Brazilian diverted towards goal only for Matz Sels to save.

The second, perhaps expectedly, came from a corner after Forest’s struggles to deal with them against Midtjylland in midweek.

The ball was whipped towards Dan Burn at the back post, who headed towards Joelinton and Sels did well to claw his subsequent header away.

The Tricky Trees were largely second-best in the first half, with Morgan Gibbs-White’s free-kick their only shot as Nick Pope easily punched it away.

It was a similar pattern in the early stages of the second half as Nick Woltemade was gifted a glorious opportunity to break the deadlock.

Morato passed straight to him so close to goal, but the Brazilian in fairness did well to recover and block his forthcoming strike.

Just before the hour mark, the hosts got the breakthrough they had been threatening, as Dan Burn fed Bruno Guimarães on the edge of the box, and he curled beautifully into the top corner.

Another corner then troubled Forest again as the ball fell to Woltemade, who rattled the underside of the crossbar from close range.

Sels kept the visitors in it with brilliant saves to deny Malick Thiaw and Harvey Barnes from point-blank range, but ex-Magpie Elliot Anderson fouled Guimarães in the area to give the hosts the chance to seal victory from the penalty spot.

Woltemade stepped up and rifled into the top corner, becoming only the third Newcastle player after Les Ferdinand and Alan Shearer to score in his first three top-flight home matches.

It means Newcastle’s last five home league wins have been accompanied by a clean sheet, which will please Eddie Howe, while Ange Postecoglou is still winless after seven games in charge of Forest.

Post-match comments

Nottingham Forest boss Ange Postecoglou to Sky Sports:

"It's alright. It's a struggle, it's a fight. There's nothing wrong with that.

"It doesn't worry me. That's why I love what I do. I could've been sitting on a couch watching you guys, depending on who's on, probably on mute, but I prefer to be here, you know, prefer to be right in the middle of it, where I can have an effect. And I believe I will."

Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes to Sky Sports:

"Has the international break come at a bad time? I think so, even more two weeks in a row, like I said, and now I have to stop a little bit.

"But yes, let's, let's see. Let's go. For myself, going to South Korea and Japan, with Brazil too friendlies. A little bit far away, but have to be ready to go there and play well and come back.

"We have Brighton and after the Champions League game, so we have to be in our best international as well."
