AC Milan coach Stefano Pioli is determined to prevent city rivals Inter Milan from celebrating the Serie A title when the teams meet on Monday. He said that the game offers his team an opportunity for redemption after a lacklustre season.

Inter, who are 14 points clear of second-placed Milan with six games remaining, would clinch their 20th Scudetto with a win at the San Siro, where Milan will play the role of hosts.

Milan have endured a disappointing spell of late, with their last realistic hope of winning a trophy this season dashed when Roma eliminated them in the Europa League quarter-finals last week with a 3-1 aggregate win.

"We can use all the terms we want: pride, responsibility and belonging. For the league table, for Thursday's elimination, for Inter's Scudetto, it's an opportunity for redemption, for pride," Pioli told reporters on Sunday.

"I have a lot of faith in my players, they know how important the game is."

If Inter win the title on Monday night, they will surpass Milan's record of 19 Serie A titles, and recent history is not in Milan's favour, as Inter have won the last five derbies in all competitions.

"We'll need the best Milan possible. Some people think we never change in derbies, but tomorrow we have to do everything we can to make sure they don't win," said Pioli.

"We'll need to play an exceptional game, because we're coming off five consecutive defeats against them and they've always given us problems."

Despite speculation in the Italian media that Pioli's job could be on the line, the 58-year-old coach believes he has more to give Milan.

"I want to give it my all as I've done since my first day, I've received a lot and I still feel I have a lot to give this team," he said.

"Work is the only verb I know, we'll try to win every game from now until the end and then we'll see."
