AS Roma closed the three-point gap on league leaders Napoli, defeating Parma 2-1 at the Stadio Olimpico to leave the Crociati with just one victory in nine Serie A matches (D4, L4).

Given that 10 of Roma’s 11 goals this campaign had come before the hour mark, it was no surprise to see the high-flying hosts dominate possession from the outset.

Despite this, clear-cut chances were hard to come by for the Giallorossi, who survived a couple of scares when Christian Ordonez miskicked following an offside in the build-up, shortly before the wide man forced a relatively routine save from Mile Svilar.

An early injury to Evan Ferguson saw Leon Bailey enter the fray, and he was the first to get Roma fans off their seat, dragging wide when one-on-one, only to have his blushes spared by an offside call.

The hosts were finally looking dangerous as the first half neared its conclusion, and it seemed like Roma had broken the deadlock when Matias Soule’s well-taken strike sent a bouncing ball into the bottom corner, but VAR intervened to flag up yet another offside.

With the interval approaching, Zion Suzuki kept the scores level, producing a smart save to turn Paulo Dybala’s header over the bar.

A positive start to the second period resulted in another opportunity for the visitors, but after a well-worked attack, Oliver Sorensen could only muster a tame effort that was easily dealt with by Svilar.

A period of Roma dominance soon followed, with Gian Piero Gasperini’s side probing for the game’s opener until it finally arrived in the 63rd minute via Mario Hermoso, who nodded a corner into the ground and away from a floored Suzuki.

Having found the net a league-low three times this season, a response wasn’t on the cards for Parma, who came closest to equalising through Sorensen’s well-executed half-volley, only to be denied by the fingertips of Svilar.

Roma gave themselves breathing room with 81 minutes on the clock when substitute Artem Dovbyk displayed neat control in a crowded box to net on the turn, but their two-goal lead was soon halved.

With time slipping away, a long throw was flicked on by Adrian Benedyczak, allowing Alessandro Circati to slide home a goal that gave Parma late optimism.

However, there was ultimately no late comeback as Roma held firm to claim just a second win in six home matches across all competitions, remaining second in the league standings but ultimately drawing level on points with Napoli once more.

As for Parma, they remain the only top-flight Italian side still to score away from home, having now won just twice in the league since November 2020 (D16, L20).
