Followers of my football predictions banked a profit on under 3.5 goals when Scotland ended goalless away to Slovenia on Saturday afternoon. It was never in doubt, and I’m happy to stick with that approach in Glasgow on Tuesday evening.

Home manager Pocognoli plots to make his team difficult to beat, and Scotland showed togetherness and fighting spirit during a tough opening 45 in Slovenia. Keeping a clean sheet will do wonders for morale after leaking four goals in three World Cup games just a few months ago.

Looking at Scotland’s recent form, a bet on under 3.5 goals landed in their last four competitive matches. That run includes a 1-0 win over Haiti, a 1-0 defeat to Morocco, a 3-0 loss to Brazil, and that goalless draw three days ago.

Moving to Switzerland, Murat Yakin’s team beat North Macedonia 3-0 on Saturday. The visitors played six matches at the World Cup. The Swiss reached the quarter-finals before losing 3-1 to eventual runners-up Argentina.

In those six summer matches, a bet on under 3.5 goals paid out four times. Switzerland drew 1-1 with Qatar, beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 4-1, edged Canada 2-1, won 2-0 against Algeria, drew 0-0 with Colombia, and lost 3-1 to Lionel Messi and co.

I’m taking sides for my second bet in Glasgow, picking Switzerland to show their class and move their record to 2-0-0 in this competition. Victory in Glasgow would see the Swiss take a firm grip of the group, and it’ll be difficult to budge them from there.

Let’s start with the obvious: world rankings. 

Switzerland are the 14th best team in the world at present, according to the FIFA rankings. That puts them above Italy, the USA, Japan, Senegal, and Egypt.

Scotland sit 42nd in the same list, behind Serbia, Congo DR, Wales, Poland, and Hungary. Football matches aren’t decided by the rankings, of course, but that explains why traders at the world’s biggest bookmakers have Switzerland as short-priced favourites to beat Scotland on their patch.

Switzerland enter on the back of a solid away win. They’re in excellent form, reached the World Cup quarter-finals, and boast a settled team that almost picks itself. Scotland, by contrast, are in a transitional period. They looked good in spells during Pocognoli’s debut, especially in the second half, but were far from convincing.

Keep it simple and add the higher-ranked team showing the better form to your midweek accumulators.

Shot on target - John McGinn

My third and final prediction from Hampden comes with the best odds attached. I’m backing fans’ favourite and Scotland legend John McGinn to have at least one shot on target.

The Aston Villa midfielder played the full match against Slovenia. His stats show he created two chances, had one shot at goal, made 29 passes, and finished with nearly 80% passing accuracy.

McGinn is such an important player for both club and country. He arrives fit, having already played eight games and faced top-level opposition. John featured against PSG in the UEFA Super Cup, Arsenal in the Premier League, and Club Brugge in the Champions League, scoring in the latter.

Aston Villa have endured a slow start to their season, but McGinn provided an assist in a 3-2 win at Tottenham before the break. He also had a shot on target against Coventry City, an assist versus Nottingham Forest, and a shot when visiting Hull City.

You don’t need McGinn to score or assist on Tuesday evening. If he has at least one shot on target, you’ll bank the profits on a 2/1 bet. That shot could come in the opening 60 seconds, or in the final few seconds of play.
