England suffer Team GB Olympic heartbreak despite Scotland win

Sarina Wiegman will have to forget about participation at the Olympics next year, despite her England side recording a 6-0 win over Scotland. The Netherlands just stayed ahead of the Lionesses in the battle for the Nations League group, winning on goal difference by beating Belgium 4-0.

For the already eliminated Scotland, a big defeat was not detrimental. England could participate in the Paris Games with Scottish players under the banner of Great Britain.

The Nations League Finals tournament is now, in February, between France, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands.

England broke the deadlock at Hampden Park after 13 minutes when Alex Greenwood opened the scoring with a fine header.

In the last seven minutes of the first period, Wiegman's side scored three more times through Lauren James (twice) and Beth Mead.

Early in the second half, the fifth goal arrived via Francesca Kirby. Five goals were not enough, though, as the Netherlands scored their third shortly before time.

Lucy Bronze seemed to save England with a sixth deep into injury time.

But when the players gathered in the centre circle, they heard that the Netherlands made it 4-0 in Tilburg.
