Ecuador v Germany: World Cup predictions, best bets and odds

Germany have already secured their place in the last 16 as group winners. The Germans have taken maximum points from their first two matches and head into the final game with the job done.

In their opener, Julian Nagelsmann’s side enjoyed a goal fest at the expense of Curacao. The World Cup debutants were handed a heavy defeat, losing 7-1 in a match where they trailed 3-1 at half-time. But not everything was a walk in the park for the Germans in this tournament. In the second match, Ivory Coast made things very difficult for them.

The Africans took the lead after half an hour through Franck Kessié. It wasn’t until the second half that Deniz Undav, who had come on just minutes earlier, equalised in the 68th minute. The winning goal came in stoppage time, with the Stuttgart striker grabbing his second in the 94th minute after an assist from Felix Nmecha. Now, Nagelsmann can afford to rotate his squad ahead of the knockout rounds.

Ecuador are in a very different situation. They arrived as one of the tournament’s potential surprise packages, but reality has been quite different.

The South American side still haven’t managed to score a goal in this World Cup. They came close in their opening match against the Ivory Coast. They hit the woodwork three times in an end-to-end game with chances for both sides, but it was the Ivorians who took the win thanks to a goal from Amad Diallo in the 90th minute.

This setback seemed recoverable, as Ecuador were up against Curacao in their second match. But then came the shock. Ecuador created chances of all kinds, but their opponents held firm thanks to a superb performance from goalkeeper Eloy Room, and the match ended 0-0.

Now, Sebastián Beccacece’s men must beat Germany to reach four points and hope for an Ivory Coast defeat, or try to qualify as one of the eight best third-placed teams.

Nothing at stake, but still favourites

Just because Germany have already qualified doesn’t mean they won’t compete against Ecuador. The Germans didn’t leave the best impression in their last match against the Ivory Coast, so they’ll want to bounce back and head into the knockouts with confidence. If Nagelsmann makes some changes, those players will have the chance to earn his trust and stake a claim for more minutes in the tougher rounds if they perform well against the South Americans.

Germany’s perfect record contrasts with Ecuador’s single point so far. Beccacece’s side have had little reward up to now, and it’s hard to imagine them producing their best performance against one of the world’s top teams. This could be Ecuador's last chance to score their first goal at the 2026 World Cup. Despite their goalless run, we believe the South Americans have done enough to at least have opened their account already. They hit the woodwork three times against the Ivory Coast and once more against Curacao, a match in which they had a total of 15 shots on target. The critical and urgent situation will force them to push even harder in attack, so we could see a lively game on the scoreboard.

Germany's form also points us towards the over 2.5 goals option between these two national teams. There were eight goals in their opener against Curacao, and the two-goal mark was also surpassed in the 2-1 win over the Ivory Coast. The attacking firepower of Havertz, Undav, Musiala and company is no small matter, and the fact that the Germans have conceded in both of their first two matches also supports this theory. With Ecuador up against it and boasting decent attacking potential, Germany may have to wait even longer for their first clean sheet of the tournament.

Undav aiming for a goal in three straight matches

Despite not being a starter, Denis Undav is the top scorer for Germany, coming off the bench to bag three goals so far. His one against Curacao was a nice addition to the score sheet, but his brace against the Ivory Coast was essential. Coming from one behind, Undav scored in the 68th and then the 94th minute to secure the three points for his team.

With a qualification already secured, Julian Nagelsmann may choose to swap some of his starters out to rest their tired legs.
