Thomas Tuchel’s men didn’t just beat Croatia in their opener – they looked very good in doing so.

Certainly in the second half, the Three Lions showed an attacking swagger that has been lacking in England sides of recent years.

They occasionally looked vulnerable defensively, however, which may at least offer some encouragement to Ghana, who needed a 95th minute goal to see off Panama in their Group L curtain raiser.

On paper, England look far superior to Ghana. And with conditions set to be somewhat favourable to the Three Lions – the Boston Stadium is an open bowl, but temperatures in the city look manageable on Tuesday – they will be expected to prevail. But can they?

Are England Ghana run riot?

Quite rightly, England are a heavy favourite for this game and have been priced accordingly: as short as 1/5 to land another victory.

That presents challenges for punters, although if we’re savvy, we can find a route to something approaching value courtesy of Paddy Power’s Bet Builder tool.

England scored four times against Croatia and created plenty, with 3.20 xG recorded from 22 shots and seven ‘big chances’ made, as per Opta’s definition.

Football has no rhyme nor reason sometimes, so assuming England will just repeat that performance is dangerous – but there was little about Ghana in their opener that suggested they have what it takes to keep the Three Lions at bay.

In fact, Panama had more possession, more shots, more touches in the opposition box and created two big chances against the Ghanaians… what could this England side produce with similar circumstances?

Tip: England -1 Handicap & A Goal In Both Halves @ 9/10 (Paddy Power)

Explanation: Our bet lands if England win by two or more goals and there’s at least one goal in each half.

Pattern recognition

There’s a chance that this game will play out in a similar fashion to Ghana’s win over Panama.

The Ghanaians sat in a low block, with the three Panama centre-backs having more touches of the ball than any other players on the pitch.

Jordan Ayew, Ghana’s lone striker, then engages when the ball is played into a deep-lying playmaker… he committed two fouls against the Panamanians.

With England keen to play through their own midfield maestro in Elliot Anderson, Ayew may be given the same assignment again, with potentially the same results.

Tip: Jordan Ayew to Commit Two Fouls @ 5/6 (Paddy Power)

Explanation: Our bet lands if Jordan Ayew commits two or more fouls.

Quick start

Harry Kane is allowed to roam and come deeper to help England build their attacks.

It places an onus on the Three Lions’ attacking midfielders to run into the space vacated, which seemed to suit Jude Bellingham against Croatia.

He produced an excellent attacking performance, scoring and having two shots on target in all, as well as six touches in the Croatia box – only Kane had more.

Finding odds-against bets in this game is not easy, but Bellingham’s free running style could be ideal against a Ghana side sitting in a low block – expect him to want to carry on where he left off last time out.

Tip: Jude Bellingham: 1+ Shot On Target in First Half @ 5/4 (Paddy Power)

Explanation: Our bet lands if Jude Bellingham has a shot on target in the first half of the game.
