Steve Clarke's side are heading home following disappointing performances in Group B, narrowly beating Haiti 1-0 before losing by the same scoreline to Morocco and getting beaten 3-0 by Brazil.
Defensive errors have been a theme of the Tartan Army's campaign and have cost them in both of their defeats, while a lack of firepower at the other end of the pitch has also prevented them from building their goal difference.
Clarke was downbeat after the loss to Brazil, before anything had been confirmed regarding their future in the competition.
"For sure, I think we're going home," he told reporters.
"In the first four or five minutes, we passed the ball well and then made a mistake. You cannot do that at this level because it puts you on the back foot and it becomes a long night."
Their fate was confirmed after Croatia beat Ghana 2-1 in Group L, nudging Scotland out of the top eight third-placed teams in the group stage.
Clarke stepped down as Scotland's head coach immediately after their elimination was confirmed.
