Switzerland started the tournament with a 1-1 draw against Qatar, but went on to win their next matches – first 4-1 against Bosnia and Herzegovina, then 2-1 against Canada. The Swiss progressed to the knockout stage as winners of Group B, finishing with seven points, scoring seven goals and conceding three.
Algeria had to fight until the very end to secure their place in the last 16 of the 2026 World Cup. The "Desert Warriors" began the tournament with a heavy 0-3 defeat to Argentina, then came from behind to beat Jordan 2-1, and finished the group stage with a 3-3 draw against Austria.

The decisive goal for their opponents came in the 6th minute of stoppage time and, interestingly, it saved the Algerians from facing Spain in the round of 16, advancing to the knockout stage in third place (4 points, goal difference 5:7).
This is the maiden tie for these two teams, with the winner of this tie playing the winner of Colombia vs Ghana.

Switzerland for the fourth time in a row
The Swiss have reached the last 16 in each of the last three World Cups. Algeria have managed this only once in their history (in 2014 in Brazil).
There's no doubt in my mind that Switzerland have more footballing quality. They're a well-organised side – with Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler operating in midfield, providing an excellent link between defence and attack. With dynamic players like Embolo, Manzambi, Vargas and Sow in their squad, Switzerland are capable of creating plenty of chances.
Algeria, on the other hand, have significant defensive problems – they've already conceded 7 goals in 3 matches, and they lack a top-class goalkeeper. Luca Zidane made several mistakes in the first two games, so in the third, he was replaced by Oussama Benbot, who also failed to impress, making an error and letting in all three Austrian shots.
Given all this, backing Switzerland to qualify – whether in normal time, after extra time, or on penalties – is fully justified.
Tip: Switzerland to Qualify - 8/15 @ bet365
Bet Explanation: This bet wins if Switzerland reach the last 16.
Algeria have attacking threats
Despite believing Switzerland will qualify, I don't expect a one-sided match. The Algerians will also want to make their mark in attack, and Riyad Mahrez and Amine Gouiri are players who need very little space to create a chance. Mahrez already has two goals and an assist to his name, while Gouiri scored in the match against Jordan.
It's also worth looking at the stats – both teams have scored in each of Switzerland's last five matches, and Algeria have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their three World Cup games so far. Moreover, in June, Algeria managed to score three goals against Austria, four against Bolivia and one against the Netherlands.
All this supports a bet on both teams to score in the upcoming clash.
Tip: Both Teams to Score - 10/11 @ bet365
Bet Explanation: The bet wins if both Switzerland and Algeria score.
At least 3 goals in the match
Following on from the previous tip, I also expect at least 3 goals in the Switzerland vs Algeria encounter. To start with, this scenario has occurred in Switzerland's last two matches and in each of the last four games involving the "Desert Warriors".
Switzerland are averaging 2.12, and Algeria 1.29 expected goals (xG) per match at this World Cup. In addition, the former averages 15 shots per game, with the latter averaging 12. These numbers, combined with the aforementioned defensive issues for both sides, suggest we should see at least 3 goals in this match.
Tip: Over 2.5 Goals in the Match - 11/10 @ bet365
Bet Explanation: This bet wins if there are at least 3 goals in the match.
