Three questions Tuchel can answer in England's pre-World Cup friendlies

The 2026 World Cup is fast approaching, and despite being among the favourites to win the tournament, England still have a few unanswered questions when it comes to their likely starting line-up.

The majority of Thomas Tuchel's side looks to be set in stone, with ever-reliable performers like Harry Kane, Declan Rice, Jordan Pickford and Bukayo Saka all involved.

Jude Bellingham - despite some minor spats with the manager - should also be a guaranteed selection, and while there is competition in their spots, Elliot Anderson, Marc Guehi and Nico O'Reilly all seem likely candidates to start the Three Lions' first game against Croatia.

That leaves three positions up in the air ahead of England's push for a first World Cup in 60 years. Tuchel's team selection in upcoming friendlies against New Zealand and Costa Rica should give plenty of hints as to who the favoured personnel will be.

The German said as much in his press conference, admitting he had '14 or 15' starters to choose from.

"I don't want to narrow myself down. I have a clear idea of 14 or 15 starters that can carry this team," he said.

"We will always have this pool of players to choose from. I had a detailed look at Croatia, but the last week has been completely about us."

Who takes the right back spot?

England have had a plethora of good options at right back for over a decade now, with Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier making the position their own at previous major tournaments.

Both of those players have recently retired from international football, though, which opened a gap in the squad for new names to stake their claim.

Ben White and Trent Alexander-Arnold missed out on the World Cup squad. In their place, Reece James, Valentino Livramento and Djed Spence have all been included in the 26-man group.

Of those three options, James stands out as the most talented in both attack and defence. The 26-year-old has had his England involvement limited by injury troubles, but is fit again after making 39 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions last season.

He is a favourite of Tuchel's, having played in six of the Three Lions' World Cup qualifiers. The duo also linked up when the German was in charge of Chelsea, winning the Champions League together in 2021.

Providing his injury issues are behind him, James should stand ahead of both Spence and Livramento in the right-back pecking order - although the other two do have their own merits and their ability to play on both sides of defence will be valuable to England throughout the tournament.

Who partners Guehi at the back?

Tuchel has barely swayed from his favoured formation since taking charge of England, utilising a back four, two slightly deeper midfielders behind an attack-minded outlet and then a front-three leading the line.

If that remains the case in North America, then we will likely see one player partner Guehi at the heart of the Three Lions' defence.

Plenty of options were included in the squad, with Ezri Konsa, John Stones, Dan Burn and Jarell Quansah the key candidates.

Resolute Aston Villa star Konsa and experienced international Stones look to be the two jostling for the spot - with Burn fitting more of a specialist role and Quansah still relatively new to the national set-up.

Stones has undoubted quality and his wealth of major tournament experience can't go unnoticed, having featured 87 times for England. He is also rumoured to be starting the friendly against New Zealand.

His recent injury record lets him down, though, having played just 18 times this season.

If fit, there would be no qualms about Stones partnering Guehi in defence. But an equally solid option in Konsa is also readily available.

The 28-year-old played an integral role in Aston Villa finishing fourth in the Premier League and winning the Europa League - valuable experiences that will only boost his standing in the national team.

Guehi's defensive partner is an area Tuchel needs to address, but both Stones and Konsa are top options to choose from.

Three players in contention on the left

The final position that England fans are still after a bit of clarity on is the left wing spot. Kane and Saka will make up the rest of the front three, but a few players could be picked on the left.

Marcus Rashford has enjoyed a resurgence in Spain with Barcelona, bagging 14 goals and 14 assists despite not always being first-choice.

Anthony Gordon - who has just signed for Barcelona from Newcastle - is another player to consider. The winger had a bit of a lacklustre campaign domestically but netted 10 times in the Champions League and provides plenty of running and energy off the ball.

A bit of a wildcard option would be Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers. The 23-year-old has been a sensation since joining Villa in 2024 and has amassed 60 goal contributions in his time there so far.

Rogers is more suited to a central role on paper and could compete for that spot in the England team with Bellingham, but often thrives when operating slightly out towards the left-hand side and finds plenty of joy in those areas at club level.

Again, much like centre back, these are all good options for Tuchel to have and there isn't necessarily a 'wrong' answer. It will be intriguing to see who features where in the Three Lions' pre-World Cup friendlies.
