Spain
FIFA rank Spain as the second-best team in the world. The Red One were at number one earlier this year, but lost their place just weeks before the World Cup gets underway.
Luis de la Fuente’s team dominated World Cup qualifying - European Group E. Five wins and a draw ensured they finished three points clear of Turkey in second place, scoring 21 goals and conceding only 2.

Spain head into the tournament with a squad full of technical quality and a manager fully committed to proactive football. De la Fuente has doubled down on the aggressive possession-based style that already brought success in recent years, building a team designed to dominate territory and control matches through the ball.
The squad announcement included several unexpected decisions. Víctor Muñoz earned his first major tournament call-up after an outstanding campaign with Osasuna, giving Spain another explosive option in wide areas despite his limited experience at the elite European level.
In defence, Eric García edged out Dean Huijsen thanks to his tactical flexibility and reliability in possession, two qualities highly valued by the coaching staff. The decision underlined De la Fuente’s preference for defenders comfortable building play from the back rather than simply relying on physical profile or potential.
Spain also kept faith in Gavi despite his recent injury struggles, while Joan García secured a goalkeeper spot after impressing consistently at club level.
There were notable omissions too. Dani Carvajal failed to recover enough continuity after his knee problems, Álvaro Morata finally lost his long-held place as Spain’s attacking reference, and Robin Le Normand narrowly missed the final cut.
On paper, few teams look more complete than Spain. The challenge, as always, will come against opponents prepared to defend deep and force them into slower, more patient matches.

In World Cup qualifying - South America, Uruguay finished fourth of 10 teams. Stats of 7 wins, 7 draws, and 4 defeats, with 22 goals scored, and 12 conceded, left The Sky Blues 10 points off the pace set by Argentina.
You can bet on Uruguay upsetting the odds and winning Group H at odds of 4/1 when using the bet365 app. That shows they have a chance, albeit a slim one. I don’t expect a bet on Uruguay to win the group to be overly popular this summer.
Few teams arrive at the World Cup surrounded by as many questions as Uruguay. Bielsa's project generated enormous excitement during its early months, but the road since then has been far less straightforward. Results have fluctuated, public disagreements have emerged and the relationship between parts of the squad and the coaching staff has frequently become a talking point.
The final squad reflects some significant decisions. Luis Suárez, one of the greatest players in Uruguayan football history, is not part of the group, closing a chapter that spanned four World Cups. Another notable omission is Nahitán Nández, whose absence surprised many given his importance throughout much of the qualifying process.

Yet writing off Uruguay has rarely been wise. The combination of competitive experience, physical edge and individual quality means La Celeste remain capable of producing performances that few teams would enjoy facing. The arrival of Georgios Donis signals a fresh start. Having spent years working in Saudi football, the Greek coach knows the league and the player pool better than most. That familiarity could prove valuable for a squad built almost entirely from domestic-based talent.
One talking point is the absence of Marwan Al-Sahafi, one of the few young Saudi attackers developing outside the country. Instead, the coaching staff have largely trusted players who arrive with regular minutes in the Saudi Pro League.
The face of the team remains Salem Al-Dawsari, but Saud Abdulhamid is arguably the player to watch. The full-back has successfully established himself abroad and arrives as one of the few Saudi internationals competing regularly at a higher level. Under Bubista, the national team has built on the foundations that regularly took them to the Africa Cup of Nations, adding tactical discipline, improving the atmosphere within the squad and continuing to recruit players from the diaspora.
Cape Verde have developed a very clear identity under their coach, usually operating in either a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 system. Against stronger opponents such as Spain and Uruguay, Bubista could opt for an even more cautious approach, potentially using five defenders despite rarely doing so during his cycle.
The team’s main strength lies in its organisation and ability to counter quickly through the wings.
